A brunch outing at a popular Orlando diner turned into a viral headache after a family of seven allegedly walked out on a nearly $300 bill, and the restaurant says surveillance cameras captured the entire exit. The video shows two adults and several children leaving the Universal Boulevard restaurant without ever paying.
According to updates shared on @TheDiner’s Instagram account, the group appeared to enjoy their meal before allegedly carrying out a coordinated exit. The restaurant claims one person walked outside with the vehicle keys to pull the car around while another adult briefly remained behind, creating the impression someone was still at the table before also leaving.
The restaurant says employees immediately began calling and texting the phone number the adults had left with the hostess while waiting for a table. When those messages went unanswered, the owners said they warned the group they planned to contact law enforcement and publicly release the surveillance footage.
What followed wasn’t just a viral video but a series of updates from the restaurant as the story unfolded. The owners said they filed a report with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, publicly identified one of the adults they believed was involved, and later claimed she responded that the attention would only make her “more famous” and bring her more “clout.”
The Exit Wasn’t as Casual as It Looked
In one Instagram update, the restaurant described what it believes happened after the meal. According to the owners, one member of the group went outside with the vehicle keys to bring the car around while the remaining diners stayed seated. Once the vehicle arrived, the restaurant says the rest of the party began leaving, with one woman allegedly remaining behind briefly to create the impression that someone was still at the table to handle the bill before she also walked out.
The owners said the group never requested the check before leaving. WKMG News 6 ClickOrlando later reported that the server was preparing drinks for another table when the group exited, which may explain why no check had been placed on the table yet.
The Restaurant Kept Posting Updates
As the footage gained traction, @TheDiner continued updating its followers rather than letting the original post speak for itself. In one update, the restaurant announced that a police report had been filed. In another, the owners said the adults still had not paid or apologized and claimed one of the women believed the publicity would only increase her online fame.
The restaurant repeatedly emphasized that the involvement of the children was the part that bothered the owners most. Their posts suggested the issue had grown beyond recovering the $298.47 and had become a matter of accountability for the example the adults allegedly set.
The owners also made clear that the situation could have been resolved privately. According to the restaurant, they tried repeatedly to reach the adults using the phone number left at the hostess stand before turning to law enforcement and social media.
The Internet Applied the Pressure
The surveillance footage quickly spread across Instagram, drawing hundreds of thousands of views and a flood of comments from people far outside Orlando. Many commenters focused on the children, arguing that walking out on the bill with kids present made the situation worse, while others urged the restaurant to continue cooperating with law enforcement rather than accepting a late payment and moving on.
Some restaurant owners joined the discussion and said the group had several opportunities to correct the situation before the footage was posted. Other commenters suggested businesses may increasingly require larger parties to leave a credit card on file or pay in advance.
The discussion was not entirely constructive. The posts also attracted racist comments and personal attacks, while other users pushed back and argued that the alleged actions of two adults should not be used to target an entire group of people.
Payment Came, but the Apology Didn’t

After days of posts, comments, and widespread sharing, the restaurant announced that the bill had finally been paid. WKMG reported the payment came shortly after the station interviewed Diane and her son Anthony, the restaurant’s owners. According to the station, the man listed as a person of interest in the sheriff’s report called and paid the $298.47 balance over the phone.
The owners had previously said they wanted both payment and a public apology. WKMG reported that the man agreed to appear on a Zoom call and issue that apology, but he never joined after the station waited approximately 20 minutes.
That left the restaurant with its money but not the accountability the owners said they were seeking. Diane and Anthony said they were still waiting for the promised apology, while the Orange County Sheriff’s Office investigation remained active at the time of WKMG’s report.
