Charging an e-bike indoors may seem safer. But according to the Bristol Township Fire Department and NBC10 Philadelphia, that’s where things went wrong after an e-bike battery exploded, sending sparks and flames through a Pennsylvania home Friday morning.
The e-bike had been brought to the house by the homeowner’s son’s friend, who was spending the night. Officials say the battery suddenly exploded around 10:05 a.m., sending hot debris across the room and igniting a couch and ottoman about 20 feet away.
Everyone inside the home managed to escape the fire, although some residents had to climb out of a second-story window to get to safety. One homeowner suffered minor burns and cuts while dragging the burning e-bike outside in an attempt to keep the fire from spreading.
Even after it was outside, the danger wasn’t over. Officials say the lithium-ion battery continued to reignite despite being sprayed with a garden hose, leaving the home with smoke and fire damage. The cause of the battery failure remains under investigation.
The Fire Spread Faster Than Anyone Expected
According to the Bristol Township Fire Department, the explosion damaged more than the e-bike. The blast threw sparks and flames across the room, igniting nearby furniture almost instantly.
Firefighters responded quickly and extinguished the blaze before it spread through the rest of the home.
Water Wasn’t Enough to Stop the Battery
The homeowner acted quickly by pulling the burning e-bike outside and grabbing a garden hose. However, officials say the battery repeatedly reignited after being doused with water.
Lithium-ion battery fires can continue to burn or reignite because the chemical reaction inside the battery generates its own heat.
Officials Continue Investigating What Caused the Explosion
Investigators have not yet determined exactly what caused the battery to fail. Officials said the battery had reportedly been replaced just a few days before the explosion, but it is still too early to say whether that played a role.
The Bristol Township Fire Department continues to investigate the incident while reminding residents to use caution when charging lithium-ion batteries inside their homes and to remember how quickly these fires can escalate.
