Dashcam footage is often shared to settle an argument about who caused a crash. One driver shared footage of an accident, thinking the Internet would side with them but commenters had a very different opinion.

The recording shared by Dash Cam Owners Australia and News.com.au shows a white Toyota Corolla emerging from a laneway in Auburn, a suburb of western Sydney. A Mazda SUV approaches on Langtry Avenue and hits the Toyota on the driver’s side.

The person who submitted the footage wrote that the woman “just comes out of the laneway.” The clip initially appears intended to focus attention on the Toyota entering the road.

However, viewers quickly noticed something else. Approximately three seconds pass from the Toyota’s appearance to the collision, yet the Mazda does not appear to slow down before impact.

The Toyota Moved Directly Into the Mazda’s Path

The original dashcam video shows the Mazda traveling along Langtry Avenue shortly after 3:20 p.m. on Aug. 6. The Toyota begins crossing the roadway from a laneway on the left.

The Corolla continues into the Mazda’s lane as the two vehicles close the remaining distance. The Mazda then strikes the Toyota’s driver-side doors, sending glass and debris across the road.

The Toyota clearly entered the path of an approaching vehicle. However, the footage also gives viewers several seconds to watch the situation develop from the Mazda driver’s perspective.

Viewers Kept Asking Why the Mazda Did Not Slow Down

Many commenters acknowledged that the Toyota should not have pulled into the road without a safe opening. They still questioned why the Mazda driver apparently continued toward a visible hazard without an obvious braking response.

Several people also wondered why the driver submitted the footage. Instead of receiving widespread support, the person behind the dashcam faced criticism for seemingly having enough time to reduce the severity of the collision or possibly even avoid it altogether. Someone commented, “So you accelerated into her to prove a point?

Another wrote, “I wouldn’t share this to your insurance company 😂

Right of Way Does Not Eliminate the Need To Avoid a Crash

The New South Wales Road Rules generally require drivers entering a continuing road from a terminating road, road-related area or adjacent land to give way to vehicles already traveling on that road.

NSW Government safety guidance tells drivers to slow down and prepare to stop when another vehicle or hazard could enter their crash-avoidance space. It also emphasizes scanning the road ahead to recognize emerging dangers early.

Defensive driving sometimes means reacting to someone else’s mistake. Having the right of way offers little protection when two vehicles occupy the same section of pavement.

One Driver Was Taken to a Hospital

NSW Police said emergency services responded to Langtry Avenue after receiving reports of the crash. Officers from the Auburn Police Area Command found the damaged Toyota sedan and Mazda SUV.

Paramedics treated the Toyota’s 39-year-old driver for minor injuries before taking her to a hospital for further assessment. The 21-year-old man driving the Mazda was not injured. Both drivers returned negative roadside breath-test results. Police said their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision remains ongoing.

No final determination of responsibility has been announced. Whatever investigators ultimately decide, the footage demonstrates why spotting a dangerous situation and reacting to it can be just as important as knowing who was supposed to give way.
