A quiet morning commute in Sacramento turned into a frightening ordeal for drivers after authorities say a man opened fire on several vehicles traveling on major highways across the city.
Investigators with the California Highway Patrol say the suspect, 33-year-old Raymond Calderone, has been arrested and is now facing a long list of serious charges following the early morning shooting spree.
The First Shots: A Victim Wounded on Highway 160
The incidents unfolded shortly after 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, when commuters were beginning their drive to work across the Sacramento area.

According to authorities, the first reported shooting occurred near Highway 160 and Northgate Boulevard in Sacramento. Investigators say a vehicle traveling along the highway was struck by gunfire from a suspect vehicle.
The victim managed to continue driving before eventually stopping near Vine Street and Dos Rios Street, where emergency responders arrived and began their investigation. Officials confirmed that one person was seriously injured and transported to a nearby hospital. At this time, investigators say no additional injuries have been reported.
Highways Shut Down as Police Hunt for Shooter
The shooting immediately triggered a large-scale law enforcement response across multiple roadways.
Authorities temporarily shut down parts of Highway 160 and Interstate 5 near downtown Sacramento while officers searched the area for evidence.

Officials explained that freeway closures are often necessary in situations like this to ensure investigators can carefully document the scene and collect crucial evidence that could help identify and track down a suspect.
As the investigation unfolded, authorities began to suspect the incidents were part of a broader series of shootings that occurred across different locations in the city.
A Spree Across the City: Multiple Vehicles Targeted
Radio traffic among law enforcement officers indicated that multiple vehicles may have been targeted by the same suspect vehicle. Officers reported shell casings discovered on the freeway and additional possible victim vehicles appearing in various locations around Sacramento.

Some of the locations mentioned in police communications included K Street and 3rd Street near Broadway, suggesting the suspect may have driven across several parts of the city while firing at other motorists.
Later in the day, the investigation led authorities to River Terrace, an apartment complex located in the South Natomas neighborhood of Sacramento.
Witnesses described seeing a large law enforcement presence outside the complex. Dozens of police vehicles were reportedly lined up as officers approached an apartment unit with weapons drawn.

Residents described the atmosphere as tense and confusing.
One resident described seeing a large number of officers securing the area and blocking access to the complex. Some people returning home from work found themselves unable to enter while investigators secured the scene.
Arrest Made, Weapons Recovered, Motive Still Unknown

Following the operation, authorities confirmed the arrest of Calderone in connection with the freeway shootings.
Investigators say they recovered two firearms believed to be linked to the incident. The weapons are now undergoing testing to determine whether they were used in the shootings earlier that morning.
Calderone is expected to face multiple criminal charges, including attempted murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle, assault with a firearm, evading police, and driving under the influence of drugs.
At this stage of the investigation, officials say the motive behind the shootings remains unknown.
A Community on Edge: Investigation Continues

Authorities are continuing to gather evidence and piece together the full sequence of events that unfolded during the chaotic morning.
The California Highway Patrol is also asking anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity or who may have information related to the case to contact investigators.
For drivers across Sacramento, the shocking incident shows just how quickly a routine commute can turn into a dangerous situation.
