If you have ever muttered, “Pay attention to the road,” at another driver, congratulations, this story was made for you. Georgia State Patrol responded early Monday morning to a crash on I-85 in South Fulton County that reads less like an accident report and more like a cautionary tale straight out of a driver’s ed video.
According to 11Alive, citing the Georgia State Patrol, the crash happened just after 1 a.m. near Fairburn when a Ford Fusion traveling southbound struck the rear of a stopped Freightliner Cascadia 125. The semi was not moving because it was part of an active construction pacing detail, meaning traffic ahead had slowed or stopped, and the truck had come to a halt as part of that operation.
A large, well-lit semi sitting still in the roadway is not subtle, but it does require a driver to actually be looking.
The Phone Was in His Lap. Ems Said He Appeared To Be Watching a Podcast.
When EMS arrived on scene, they found the driver of the Ford with his cellphone in his lap. According to the Georgia State Patrol statement, EMS personnel said it appeared he was actively watching a podcast at the time of the crash.
Not texting. Not navigating. Watching a podcast. At one in the morning. On the interstate.
Troopers determined the Ford driver was following too closely and driving distracted. The impact forced the Fusion underneath the trailer, leaving it lodged under the rear of the semi. The Freightliner driver told troopers he had stopped due to traffic ahead and had no warning before the collision.
The Driver Survived
The initial Georgia State Patrol statement did not specify the condition of the Ford driver. However, 11Alive later reported that GSP confirmed the driver did survive the crash.
That detail matters because underride crashes like this are often far more severe. A passenger car striking the rear of a stopped semi at speed can have catastrophic outcomes, making survival in this case notable even as questions remain about the driver’s condition.
GSP cited the driver for distracted driving and following too closely. Whether any additional charges will follow has not been announced.
A Straightforward Reminder About Distracted Driving
The takeaway here is simple: podcasts are great. Watching them while driving is not. If your eyes are on a screen, they are not on the road, and that is how you end up under the back of a stopped semi.
Listening can be done safely. Watching cannot. That Freightliner was not going to move out of the way, and the Ford Fusion is now a reminder of what happens when attention goes somewhere it should not.
