Police departments have proven time and again that they’re fans of fast cars, given the kind of fleet additions we have seen in the last few months.

Be it Dodge Chargers, Ford Mustangs, or even the Ford Mustang Mach-E, which was recently procured by the Dearborn Police Department, police officers have all the power on tap to have fun while they solve crime.

The Mustang Mach-E will join the Dearborn Police Department’s aggressive driving unit, given its quick acceleration, which will help nab reckless drivers in no time.

The police unveiled the Mustang Mach-E during Dearborn’s 100th annual Memorial Day parade on Monday.

A video on Instagram by TCD News shows Dearborn Police officers driving three Ford Mustang Mach-Es through the Memorial Day parade, sporting colors such as blue, black, and off-white.

The cars, ready to chase suspects on the road, featured lights, sirens, and bold Dearborn Police decals on the doors. However, the decals appear transparent, likely giving the vehicles a more unmarked look from a distance.

Being a part of the aggressive driving unit, the cars will be used to address speeding, reckless driving, and other dangerous driving violations across Dearborn.

According to a report by Ford Authority, Ford does not make an official pursuit version of the Mustang Mach-E, but it still managed to pass the Michigan State Patrol vehicle test in late 2021, becoming the first EV to do so. Notably, the EV crossover is also being used by law enforcement agencies in other countries.

Dearborn police officers driving the Mustang Mach-E will have 480 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque at their disposal (without the performance upgrade), courtesy of a dual-motor powertrain.

Acceleration times are close to supercar territory, as 0-60 mph arrives in a little over three seconds. The Mustang Mach-E offers a 280-mile range, meaning officers may not have to worry about charging while intercepting cars if they’re good at power management.

Further details, such as the number of Mustang Mach-Es procured and the kind of technology used in the EV crossover, are being awaited.

New York Police Upgrades Fleet with Ford Mustang GT

Guessing Headlights reported last month about the New York State Police adding 19 units of the Ford Mustang GT to its fleet to address excessive speeding and aggressive driving.

A prototype Mustang GT police patrol vehicle was used for training and evaluation before it began its official patrol deployment in the Troop G (Capital Region).

The NYSP states that the Ford Mustang GT has been included in its fleet to adapt to “evolving traffic enforcement challenges.”

What particularly impressed the department was the Mustang’s “performance and maneuverability,” which will come in handy when dealing with “aggressive driving, excessive speeding and other hazardous driving behaviors that put public safety at risk.”

In addition, the Mustang costs 30% less than the patrol SUVs, and is expected to offer enhanced visibility, safety, and all-weather capability.

The vehicle was deployed in “a targeted manner in each State Police Troop” on the highways to support “high-visibility enforcement details and complement existing patrol vehicles.”

The NYSP expects the Mustang GTs to improve “enforcement effectiveness and officer safety, and to serve as a visible deterrent to dangerous driving.”

Announcing the addition of the Ford Mustang GT to the NYSP fleet, Superintendent Steven G. James said:

“These vehicles represent a thoughtful and strategic addition to our fleet. Our goal is to provide troopers with the tools they need to safely and effectively carry out their mission. The Mustang enhances our ability to conduct traffic enforcement while reinforcing our commitment to protecting the public on New York’s roadways.”
