None of that mattered once the anthem started, though, because an older fan in Cubs gear decided he had a bone to pick with the young man seated in front of him who wasn’t standing up. According to the footage, the older man leaned over and told the younger fan to “Get up,” and when that didn’t work, he leaned in closer before swatting the back of the seated man’s head. The young man stood up almost immediately.
Some people standing nearby found the interaction shocking, asking: “Why did you do that?” The man replied that the younger fan was not standing for the National Anthem. It seemed like some people were shocked by the physical reaction while some were on the older man’s side.
Ironically, the older man continued ranting at the young man throughout the National Anthem, which doesn’t feel very respectful either. I would have figured he’d want to stand at attention to pay respects to the song.
The Crowd Was Split
Some fans nearby seemed unbothered by the whole exchange, and plenty of folks online agreed, framing it as a harmless nudge over basic respect. Others weren’t so forgiving, pointing out that sitting during the anthem isn’t illegal and that putting hands on someone over it crosses a line regardless of intent.
A few legal commentators weighed in, noting that depending on the details, this kind of contact could technically qualify as battery. Whether anything comes of it remains to be seen, and as of this week it doesn’t appear charges have been filed.
