There are plenty of excuses drivers give officers when caught speeding, but one excuse that a speeding Chevrolet C5 Corvette driver gave a California Highway Patrol officer clearly stood out.

A YouTube video uploaded by California Bodycam shows the officer intercepting a white Corvette on Interstate 80 in Solano. Upon being pulled over, the Corvette driver told the officer he was headed to his grandmother’s house.

However, the officer was furious because he had recorded the Corvette hitting 148 mph in a 65 mph zone, an offense that could potentially lead to the car being impounded and the driver serving jail time.

Despite the severity of the violation, the officer did not arrest the driver or impound his Corvette.

According to the video description, the incident occurred on April 15, 2026, when California Highway Patrol Officer McIntosh was parked in the center median of Interstate 80 in Solano County, California, and spotted a speeding Corvette hitting 148 mph.

In no time, the officer initiated a pursuit and sped up to 130 mph, catching up with the Corvette, whose speed had dropped to around 70 mph due to traffic. The officer called in the Corvette’s license plate before activating his emergency lights.

Complying with the officer’s orders, the Corvette driver pulled up, but at a potentially dangerous spot. As a result, the officer asked him to move from there before ordering him to stop at a safer place by blowing the siren.

The Corvette stopped by the shoulder with the hazard lights flashing. As Officer McIntosh walked to the Corvette, the video switched to a bodycam point of view. Talking to the 20-year-old driver, the officer asked him:

“What are you doing? Why are you going so fast?”

Some cars could be heard honking in the background, to which the officer said:

“You hear people honking? That’s because they’re happy that I pulled you over, you understand? I got you on radar at 148 mph in a 65.”

The Corvette driver told the officer that he was on his way to his grandmother’s house. Unfortunately, the rest of the driver’s explanation could not be heard due to excessive wind noise.

After checking the driver’s license on his smartphone and inspecting insurance papers, the officer told the young driver that he was not arresting him for reckless driving and instead let him off with an infraction. The video caption read:

“Instead of arresting the man for Reckless Driving and towing the Corvette, Officer McIntosh cited the driver for a violation of California Vehicle Code section 22348(B), which is speeding in excess of 100 MPH. Although this violation is only an infraction, it carries large fines and the possibility of license suspension.”

People in the Comments Question How the Corvette Driver Was Let Off So Easily

Several viewers have expressed their views on the incident, with most believing that the Corvette driver should have been arrested. Some reactions are below:

One user wrote:

“Seriously, he should have gone to jail and no license.”

Another user wrote along similar lines:

“Wow he should have been arrested and car confiscated. Risking lives everyone on the road and he even had a passenger.”

One user revealed the law for excessive speeding in Canada:

“In Ontario Canada if a vehicle is going 40 clicks over it’s classified as stunt driving. The vehicle is towed away and impounded for 7 days and the fines are crazy.”

A user expressed that such speeds could be too dangerous to handle:

“That is ridiculous! Going that fast in traffic, endangering all those lives, should be an automatic loss of license, impound vehicle and jail.”

Will the judge suspend his license? One user wrote:

“He should have been arrested but I wouldn’t be surprised if the judge hits him with a reckless and suspends his license. What a jackass.”

A Corvette driver from Florida wrote:

“Don’t try that in Florida. That’s an automatic trip to county lock up, vehicle gets seized and it’s a real expensive trip. I have several corvettes and I’ve never been this stupid in any of them.”
