A Connecticut man accused of forcing a woman out of a moving vehicle before taking her money didn’t make it particularly far before another police department spotted his vehicle. Waterford Police say 20-year-old Kieyhon Shelton was later taken into custody in neighboring East Lyme as he attempted to walk away from the vehicle.

Waterford officers responded to the area of the Waterford Speedbowl on Route 85 at approximately 4:23 p.m. on October 3. They had received a report that a woman was forced out of a moving vehicle by a male driver she knew.

Police say the driver had a firearm and took the woman’s money during the incident. The woman suffered injuries primarily to her arms and leg and was transported by ambulance to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital.

Waterford Police broadcast a description of the man and vehicle to other law enforcement agencies following the incident. That information soon reached East Lyme Police, whose officers located the vehicle and its driver in Niantic.

East Lyme Police located the vehicle in the area of Samuel M. Peretz Park at Bride Brook on West Main Street. According to both departments, Shelton exited the vehicle and was taken into custody while attempting to walk away from it.

Officers subsequently located a firearm nearby on the park grounds. East Lyme Police said the firearm matched the description provided following the Waterford incident.

East Lyme Police later credited communication between the neighboring departments with helping officers quickly locate the vehicle and bring the incident to a safe conclusion. Waterford Police did not provide additional details about where on the park grounds the firearm was recovered or how far it was from the vehicle.

Shelton Faces Several Charges

Waterford Police announced 10 charges against Shelton, including first-degree robbery, second-degree larceny, third-degree assault and first-degree unlawful restraint. He was also charged with evading responsibility involving physical injury and first-degree threatening while displaying a firearm.

The remaining firearm-related charges include carrying a pistol without a permit, illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen firearm, and criminal possession of a firearm while subject to a restraining or protective order. Police did not provide further information about the protective order or explain the circumstances surrounding the stolen-firearm charge in their announcement.

Shelton was processed and held on a $250,000 bond, according to Waterford Police. His court date was scheduled for October 5 at G.A. 10 in New London, and the department emphasized that an arrest does not constitute a conviction.

Guessing Headlights searched the Connecticut State Department of Correction for additional information on the case, but we were unable to locate anything. As always, this is an arrest, not a conviction, and all parties are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
