California has a new incentive designed to make electric vehicles cheaper, which sounds straightforward enough. Once you look at the eligibility requirements, however, plenty of EV shoppers will discover that the money isn’t actually available to them.
The state’s MyFirstEV program comes with two particularly significant restrictions. Buyers must be new to zero-emission vehicle ownership, while new vehicles are subject to a $50,000 MSRP ceiling.
That creates an obvious problem for someone replacing an existing EV or shopping above that price point. Lexus happens to sell electric vehicles to exactly those kinds of customers.
According to CarsDirect, Lexus has now introduced its own California rebate that removes both restrictions. The automaker is offering less money than the state, but considerably more people can actually qualify for it.
Lexus Will Give Buyers $2,500
CarsDirect reports that Lexus sent dealers a bulletin at the beginning of September detailing its new MyLexusEV Rebate. The program provides eligible California customers with $2,500 toward a new Lexus EV and is scheduled to remain available through the end of September.
Unlike California’s program, there is no $50,000 MSRP cap, and buyers don’t need to be purchasing their first EV. The rebate can also be applied when buying or leasing an eligible model.
California’s MyFirstEV program offers a larger $3,500 incentive on qualifying new EVs, along with $1,750 for eligible used models. Its tighter requirements, however, mean existing EV owners and shoppers considering more expensive vehicles can be excluded entirely.
You Can Stack It With Other Lexus Deals
The biggest advantage may be the ability to combine Lexus’ $2,500 rebate with existing incentives. CarsDirect says the 2026 Lexus RZ can qualify for additional savings, potentially bringing the total discount to as much as $6,500 depending on the applicable offer and transaction.
The new electric Lexus ES is also eligible for the MyLexusEV rebate, although CarsDirect reports that it currently doesn’t have additional purchase or lease rebates to stack on top. Financing offers are available for the electric sedan instead.
Lexus Isn’t Waiting For California
Interestingly, CarsDirect notes that the California Air Resources Board still lists Lexus as having funds available through the state’s MyFirstEV program. Lexus’ decision to create a separate incentive therefore appears aimed at reaching customers who fall outside California’s eligibility rules rather than simply replacing exhausted state funding.
There is an obvious business motive here, of course. Lexus wants to sell more EVs, and handing customers $2,500 is another way to get them looking at an RZ or electric ES.
For many California shoppers, though, Lexus’ smaller rebate could ultimately prove more useful than the state’s larger one. A $3,500 incentive looks better on paper, but not if the eligibility rules leave you with nothing.
