This driver might want to stay away from the steering wheel for a while. Pleasanton Police say what began as one nearby collision eventually led officers to a second crash, a damaged water main, and a driver allegedly trying to make an escape on foot.
Officers were called to Owens Drive and Rosewood Drive after a vehicle ended up colliding with the water main. While looking into what happened, police discovered the driver was also suspected of being responsible for another collision in the area earlier.
Things only became more concerning when officers reportedly noticed signs of alcohol impairment. Rather than sticking around, police say the driver attempted to flee before officers tracked them down and took them into custody.
For all the damage allegedly caused along the way, there’s at least one positive part of the story. Police didn’t report anyone being injured, meaning the driver appears to have hit just about everything except the worst possible outcome.
Two Crashes and an Attempt To Get Away
The Pleasanton Police Department didn’t provide many additional details about the earlier collision, including what the driver struck or how much time passed between the two incidents.
What police did say is that the second collision involved the vehicle hitting a water main near Owens Drive and Rosewood Drive. After discovering the suspected connection to the earlier crash and observing signs of alcohol impairment, officers began working to locate the driver.
The person then attempted to flee, but didn’t make it very far. Pleasanton Police credited the “quick response, coordination, and teamwork” of its officers for safely finding and taking the driver into custody.
Police did not identify the driver or specify what charges they are facing in the post. The department instead used the incident to remind drivers to arrange a sober ride, use public transportation, or stay where they are rather than getting behind the wheel after drinking.
Commenters Are Just Glad It Wasn’t a Person
The biggest takeaway among commenters was relief that the crash apparently ended with damaged property rather than someone getting seriously hurt. “Thank goodness it was a water pipe and not a person that got hit,” one person wrote, before joking that perhaps the Tesla should be able to detect an impaired driver and pull itself over.
Another commenter claimed the damaged infrastructure was actually a fire sprinkler main serving a nearby building, although police themselves described it only as a water main. Either way, they argued the situation could have become even worse had a fire occurred while it was damaged.
Naturally, someone also delivered the obligatory response to seeing a vehicle somewhere it very clearly shouldn’t be: “You can’t park there mate.”
