A dramatic roadside encounter involving a federal judge and a damaged Cadillac has drawn attention after police body camera footage captured the moment officers suspected the driver was intoxicated following a crash.

According to the video, the incident unfolded on a dark roadside in Michigan when an officer approached a heavily damaged Cadillac that had apparently been involved in a collision.

The officer immediately noticed the vehicle’s airbags had deployed and that the side of the car showed clear signs of impact.

Judge Claims No Memory of Crash After Airbags Deployed

The officer began by asking the driver if he was able to exit the vehicle.

The man calmly responded that his door was not stuck and that he could step out. However, when the officer pointed out the visible damage and the deployed airbags, the driver claimed he had no idea why they had deployed or what might have caused the damage.

The officer directed the man to move to the back of the Cadillac and place his back against the trunk while they spoke. The driver identified himself simply as “Tom” and insisted he had not consumed any alcohol that evening.

Despite that claim, the officer explained that reports indicated the vehicle had struck several roadside signs roughly a mile earlier. That would explain both the airbag deployment and the damage along the side of the car.

Driver Reveals He Is a Federal Judge

The driver appeared confused.

He repeatedly told the officer he had no memory of hitting anything and could not explain what had happened. He said he had been driving for several hours after leaving federal court in Bay City, Michigan, and was heading to his cottage.

It was around this point during the conversation that the driver revealed he was in fact a federal judge, although the revelation didn’t seem to influence the officer’s approach. Indeed, that’s District Judge Thomas L. Ludington.

Nominated by President George W. Bush and confirmed in 2006 as a judge for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, Ludington is the sole judge covering the Northern Division, which spans nearly a quarter of Michigan’s land area.

Before his federal appointment, he served on the 42nd Circuit Court of Michigan from 1995 to 2006, including time as chief judge. While this bodycam footage got released recently, the incident happened in October 2025 in Emmet County, Michigan.

Field Sobriety Tests Reveal Struggles and Confusion

The officer continued with a series of questions meant to determine whether the judge was impaired or suffering from a medical issue.

The judge denied having any head injuries, diabetes, or medication use that might explain his condition.

Concerned about his behavior, the officer began administering field sobriety tests. The first involved asking the judge to follow the officer’s finger with his eyes without moving his head.

Judge struggled to comply.

The officer repeatedly reminded him to keep his head still and track the finger only with his eyes. The judge instead kept looking at the officer rather than the moving finger.

Cognitive Tests Go Awry as Judge Gives Wrong Answers

Next came a coordination test where the judge was asked to imagine a straight line and position his feet heel to toe. Before the test could even begin, the officer paused after noticing the man was having difficulty following simple instructions.

The officer then attempted a cognitive test. He asked the judge to choose a number between 19 and 21.

The man responded with 15.

Moments later the officer asked him to recite the alphabet from the letter C to the letter Q without singing.

Instead, the judge began with “A B C D” and then trailed off into a jumbled sequence of letters that did not resemble the requested range.

At that point the officer requested a preliminary breath test. Before the first attempt, the judge had to remove gum from his mouth to avoid affecting the reading.

Failed Breath Test Leads to DUI Arrest

When the test began, the officer instructed him to take a deep breath and blow steadily through the mouthpiece.

The device registered no airflow.

The officer explained that the machine could detect when someone was blowing and told the judge he needed to blow continuously like inflating a balloon.

Despite several attempts, the man still failed to produce a proper sample. The officer warned that failing to blow into the device would be treated as a refusal under Michigan law.

After multiple unsuccessful attempts, the officer concluded the driver was not cooperating with the test. Ludington is a long-serving federal judge with a reputation for handling complex civil and criminal matters.

Judge Stunned as He’s Handcuffed and Taken to Jail

He informed the judge that he was under arrest for driving under the influence.

Police reports would later indicate a blood-alcohol level of 0.27, more than three times the legal limit, leading to misdemeanor charges of operating while intoxicated and operating with high BAC.

He was subsequently placed on administrative leave.

While placing him in handcuffs, the officer stated that he could smell alcohol on the driver and pointed out that the man had been involved in a crash and was unable to follow simple instructions.

The judge looked stunned by the situation.

“What in the hell are we doing?” he asked as he was escorted toward the patrol vehicle.

The officer replied plainly that he was being arrested.

Even as he was placed in the back seat of the police car, the man seemed bewildered by the turn of events. When he asked where they were headed, the officer delivered a blunt answer.

They were going to jail.
