But that is exactly what a growing number of metro Atlanta property owners are dealing with this season, as thieves have been swiping entire HVAC units in broad daylight, leaving victims without cool air and without thousands of dollars they didn’t budget to spend twice.
Casey Ingram is one of those victims. He was out to dinner with his wife when his Ring doorbell camera caught two men pulling into his driveway, backing a truck right up to his AC unit, and driving off with the whole thing. No tag on the truck. Low hats. In and out in under seven minutes. It is the kind of footage that makes you wonder if these guys rehearsed it, because there was nothing frantic about the job. They knew exactly what they were doing.
Ingram ended up paying nearly $3,000 for a replacement unit on a property he was preparing to sell, reported WSB-TV, which is its own kind of insult. You fix up a house to get it ready for a new owner, and somebody decides your investment is their payday. He has since installed a protective cage around the new unit, and honestly, that feels like the smart move for anyone in an affected neighborhood going forward.
Security Measures
Security contractors are seeing the same pattern. Chris Welch, who owns Ornamental Security, says he has never fielded this many AC theft calls in his three decades in business. He recently outfitted a Vine City Airbnb with a cage after its unit was stolen overnight, and he has also worked on a Kroger grocery store where thieves stripped copper and other metals from multiple units.
Welch is now building custom barriers designed to slow thieves down enough that grabbing a unit is no longer the quick smash-and-grab it used to be.
The Math Behind the Madness
Here is the part that might make your blood boil a little more. The copper in a single AC unit is worth roughly $30–$40 on the scrap market. That is it. Meanwhile, homeowners are shelling out $4,000 to $5,000 to replace a stolen unit outright.
These thieves are risking a felony theft charge for what amounts to a nice dinner out, while their victims are left footing a bill that could cover a used car.
Protecting Your Property Without Breaking the Bank
The good news is that a security cage is not as expensive as you might think. A basic cage runs about seven to eight hundred dollars installed, while a heavier-mesh version runs closer to one thousand to twelve hundred dollars.
That is a fraction of the cost of replacing a stolen unit, and it turns a six-minute theft into a much longer, much louder ordeal that most thieves simply will not bother with.
It May Look Funny, But Nobody is Laughing
There is something almost cartoonish about criminals hauling off a full AC unit for the copper equivalent of a tank of gas, except the joke stops being funny when you are the one sweating through an Atlanta summer with no air conditioning and a hefty repair bill.
If you live in a neighborhood where this has become a pattern, a cage seems like cheap insurance. Atlanta police are still searching for the suspects in Ingram’s case, and until they catch a few of these crews, it looks like homeowners are on their own to cage up and hope for the best
