A man was hospitalized Monday morning after his car crossed several lanes of traffic, jumped a curb, and crashed into a ditch in Abilene, Texas, according to KTAB and KRBC. People nearby saw it happen and ran over to help before first responders arrived. As of midday, no one had said what caused the wreck.

Witnesses told the stations that the driver was heading east on South 1st Street, near Sewell Street, when he veered across all of the lanes. He went over a curb and dropped into a ditch at around 11 a.m. By the time a news crew arrived, the car sat so far off the road that brush had it almost completely hidden.

When the witnesses reached the car, they found the man slumped over the dashboard. He lifted his head to look at them for a moment, then slumped over again. First responders arrived soon after and began working to get him out of the vehicle.

Crews freed the man from the car, and he was taken to a hospital. He was the only person inside at the time of the crash. His name, age, and condition have not been released.

What’s Still Unknown

For now, there are still several questions that need to be answered. For instance, investigators haven’t determined why the car drifted across the road and into the ditch. This is a bit of an early crash report that usually fills in over the following days, but at this time, there’s no additional information provided by the outlets covering the story or the agencies working on it.

One detail stands out from the witness account. That’s the fact that the man was slumped over and barely responsive right after the crash. With the way the car crossed every lane before leaving the road, it could have been a potential medical episode, though that’s supposition at present. Investigators haven’t yet come forward with exactly what happened.

Until they do, what we know is simply that the man was pulled out alive and that several people stopped to help him.
