Electric vehicle enthusiasts rejoice! After lengthy delays, production of Volvo’s latest electric SUV, the EX90, is finally off to a good start in South Carolina. The luxurious seven-seater is finally ready to electrify our roads; never mind, it’s over six months late to the party.
Volvo’s Charleston factory was initially scheduled to start producing the EX90 in late 2023. Unfortunately, the EX90 and its sibling, the Polestar 3, experienced software hiccups serious enough to delay their production. Volvo promises all the glitches have been ironed out, and the first batch of EX90s will be delivered to eager customers very soon.
Powerful Performance
Under that classic yet modern Volvo boxy shape of the EX90, there’s a true electric powerhouse hiding. Even in the base trim, the two electric motors deliver 402 hp and 568 pound-feet of torque. That’s enough to catapult the EX90 from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. The 111 kWh battery pack promises 300 miles of range on a combined cycle, making the largest Volvo a decent road trip companion.
If the base model feels underpowered to you, there’s always the Twin Motor Performance version. Power gets a boost to 496 hp, and the torque jumps to 671 pound-feet, shaving off an entire second from the 60 mph sprint. A properly fast Volvo SUV – now that’s a first.
Luxury Comes At A Price

With a buttery smooth suspension, plenty of power on tap, and an interior as luxurious as the best Swedish house, the EX90 doesn’t come cheap. The base model starts at $79,995, while the Performance version asks for $86,145. That’s before you even look at the vast options list, interior layouts for six or seven passengers, and four different trim levels.
This being Volvo, the safety package is comprehensive. The EX90 is loaded with the latest technology, including LiDAR sensors, radar sensors, and cameras, all working together to keep you safe on the road. The car constantly monitors the driver’s behavior, and if it senses something’s off, it’ll pull over and call for help.
Despite the initial production delay, the Volvo EX90 is a compelling contender in the busy luxury SUV market. It has the range, plenty of power, and more kit than we could possibly want. The price won’t make the EX90 a common sight on our roads, but it will attract buyers looking for exclusivity. Add to it Volvo’s safety record, and this electric SUV starts looking really attractive.
