If you land yourself in trouble, you might expect your parents to support you, rather than effectively turn you in. Well, sadly, for one Florida man, his mother had other ideas after she spotted videos of him on his own YouTube channel and called the police, suspecting him of driving under the influence (DUI).
Thomas Leininger, 37, was arrested in Vero Beach on August 23rd 2026. Officers had been asked to check on him after his mother had seen videos he had uploaded to YouTube, with the videos seemingly showing him driving while intoxicated as well as making threats.
It almost sounds like something out of a movie, but it was very true. A police report shown by the Law & Crime YouTube channel stated that his mother had asked the police to go check on him after seeing his videos. The mother even pointed officers to a location they might find him.
Ironically, it was only after spotting a silver Chevrolet Tahoe making an illegal U-turn that they found the 37-year-old. After following the Tahoe to the gas station, the officers saw Leininger get out of the car, and he identified himself. It was clear quite quickly that he had been drinking.
Leininger Admitted To Having a Few Drinks
In the video, the officers said that Leininger had red, glassy eyes and that there was a strong smell of alcohol. He even admitted to drinking, as after the officers asked if he had done so, he said: “I only had a few shots.” Leininger said to the officers he was having a tough time before they told him that his mother had called them to help her control him.
Field sobriety tests were then carried out, including Leininger walking in a straight line and attempting a one-leg stand. Leininger struggled to follow the police officers’ instructions and failed to maintain his balance. In fact, he kept trying to do the exercise, all while one of the officers was perfectly demonstrating it. Leininger could not keep his balance at all.
In the video, with the dashcam footage shared by the Vero Beach Police Department, Leininger was clearly willing to do the sobriety tests. But it was quite clear that he’d had a lot to drink up to that point, and the officers had no choice but to arrest him. The footage also showed Leininger attempting to do the balance test while it was being demonstrated to him by one of the officers. The bodycam footage stretches over 20 minutes.
What Happened After Leininger Was Arrested?
There was no scuffle or argument when the Floridian was arrested. When he was placed inside the police car, Leininger can be heard saying, “I don’t hate you, bro,” with the officer responding, “I gotchu, my man.” The officers are also seen searching his car after he told them he did a shot and threw a bottle inside his Chevrolet.
On the way to jail, Leininger reportedly said he had been taking shots all day long. Breath tests produced readings of 0.151 and 0.154. In the end, he pleaded no contest to the offense. He was ordered to pay court costs, along with a $1,000 fine. It is quite remarkable to think it took his mom watching his YouTube videos for the police to catch Leininger.
