Mercedes-AMG is seemingly on a bit of a crusade right now to rediscover some of its mojo. We have already seen that on show with the incredible CLE 646 revealed a week ago, with a massive twin-turbocharged V8 under the hood.
Now, the new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series has been spotted on test, which looks to be a further boost to the brand’s lineup. It will even carry over a version of the M177 Evo flat-plane-crank V8 engine to make it as unhinged an AM GT Black Series as it is possible to get.
Several publications have said that it could become the jewel in the crown of the Mercedes-AMG GT range. If the German brand wants to take on the likes of the Porsche 911, then it has to muster all the strength it can. This new Black Series looks to be the answer.
The car was recently spied out testing at the legendary Nürburgring racetrack, and it looks like Mercedes has packed the car with an unreal amount of aero. This has to be one of the most aggressive-looking Mercedes-AMG products of recent years.
What Spy Images Reveal About the New Black Series
In the images, we can see a full-width and full-height swan-neck rear wing, complete with a drag reduction system (DRS). There is a massive rear diffuser, which should provide plenty of downforce, as well as box-sill sections for the side-exit exhausts that we have seen on all the development cars so far. There are a few influences from the Mercedes-AMG ONE hypercar too.
The most notable of these are the active aero-winglets that are on top of the front wings. These allow the air to escape out of the wheel arches. Beneath the surface, the car is also expected to have AMG’s multi-stage and adjustable traction control. The active suspension of the regular GT road cars is also likely to be heavily revised, if not replaced entirely, with new performance-oriented parts being used. An adjustable coilover setup is likely to be used on the car.
The front of the car has a relatively small grille with vertical slats. More aerodynamic elements are visible on the front bumper, and there is a central air scoop in the hood. Winglets are also visible on the hood, and these were displayed in the open position in some of the spy shots. This is a strong hint that they are part of the car’s active aerodynamics package. A package that certainly creates a striking impression, even beneath the camouflage wrapping.
The Aero Package Is the Highlight of the New Mercedes
It is obvious that the car’s aero package is the real standout. Down the sides, we can see large air channels, indicating Mercedes has put a lot of time into how the car manages airflow. The rear wing and diffuser, of course, play a massive part in that as well, while there is an unusual mesh-like structure around the back of the car too. The entire car is incredibly radical to look at, and that is before we even discuss what is likely to be under the hood.
We do not currently know what exactly is under the hood of the new car. However, it is expected to be a flat-plane-crank V8. It’s likely to be more powerful than the previous GT Black Series, which had 720hp and 590lb-ft of torque. Many expect the power figure to push well north of 800hp, meaning it would be more than capable of taking on the likes of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS or the Manthey 911 GT3 RS.
