A morning jog in Middleburg, Florida, turned into a terrifying encounter Tuesday when a man allegedly grabbed a woman from behind, pulled her into the woods and attempted to sexually assault her.

The incident happened around 10 a.m. August 11 along Tynes Boulevard in the Two Creeks area, according to Fox 13. Investigators identified the suspect as 22-year-old Jayson Thomas.

According to Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook, the woman was jogging when she passed Thomas, whom she did not know. Authorities say he grabbed her from behind, dragged her into a wooded area, threw her to the ground and began forcibly removing her clothing. The woman fought back, escaped and ran to a nearby home, where residents called 911.

What followed was a neighborhood search involving deputies, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper, undercover narcotics detectives and residents who provided information about Thomas’ movements. Authorities said he was taken into custody within about 30 minutes.

Woman Fights Back During Attack

Cook praised the woman’s response, describing her courage as remarkable and crediting her actions with helping authorities locate the suspect.

When asked what someone should do if an attacker attempts to abduct them, Cook gave direct advice: resist if possible and do whatever is necessary to get away. She specifically mentioned fighting, screaming, kicking and biting.

The sheriff emphasized that the woman did not willingly go with her attacker. Her decision to fight back allowed her to escape and reach a nearby home, where residents immediately called 911.

The woman was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries and is recovering. Cook also said she spoke with the woman’s mother, who described her as shaken but doing well.

Suspect Ran Through Neighborhood

After the woman escaped, Thomas allegedly fled through the surrounding neighborhood. Investigators said he went through several backyards, changed his clothes and eventually entered an occupied home in the Pine Ridge area.

The homeowners did not know Thomas and confronted him after he entered their house. He then fled again, giving deputies another opportunity to catch up with him.

Tynes Elementary School was also briefly placed on a hold as a precaution while authorities searched the area. Officials said the incident was not connected to the school.

60-Year-Old Deputy Helps Catch Suspect

One of the more unusual details came during the foot pursuit.

A 60-year-old deputy chased Thomas through the neighborhood and eventually caught up with him. Body-camera footage captured a deputy joking with Thomas after his arrest about being out of breath.

“You let a 60-year-old man run you down,” the deputy told him, according to footage described by FOX 13.

The moment provided a little levity after a frightening incident, but the larger response involved serious cooperation between law enforcement and residents. Cook credited the public’s tips, along with assistance from the Florida Highway Patrol and undercover narcotics detectives, with helping officers locate Thomas quickly.

Thomas Faces Four Charges

Thomas was charged with kidnapping, attempted sexual battery, burglary to an occupied residence and resisting without violence. He remains accused of the offenses, and the charges are allegations that have not been proven in court.

Authorities are also investigating whether Thomas could be connected to any other incidents in the area. Cook urged anyone who believes they may have been victimized to contact the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

The case is a reminder that the initial moments of an attack can be critical. In this instance, the woman’s decision to fight for her freedom was followed by a rapid response from nearby residents and law enforcement, ultimately ending with the suspect in custody.
