A Georgia sheriff’s deputy traded in routine patrol duties for a little cattle wrangling after spotting an unexpected traffic hazard during the evening commute. Instead of dealing with a stalled car or crash, the deputy found a calf wandering down the middle of a busy road.
The unusual encounter happened on Hopewell Road, where Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Master Deputy Hammock noticed the young calf strolling through traffic. With rush hour underway, deputies said the animal was only moments away from creating a potentially dangerous situation for both drivers and itself.
Without hesitation, Deputy Hammock pulled over and stepped in to keep the calf from wandering into oncoming traffic. The sheriff’s office joked that the deputy “channeled his inner cowboy” as he safely guided the animal away from the roadway.
As luck would have it, the agency’s public information officer happened to be driving home when she came across the scene. She quickly grabbed her phone and recorded the final moments as the deputy escorted the calf back into its pasture.
Deputy Safely Returned the Calf Home

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office said the calf was safely reunited with its pasture without anyone getting hurt. Officials added that protecting the community sometimes means looking after residents with four legs just as much as those with two.
The agency shared video of the rescue on social media, giving viewers a front-row seat to the deputy’s impromptu cowboy skills. Deputies joked that the adventurous calf may already be planning its next escape despite the happy ending.
While loose livestock can quickly become a serious roadway hazard, the encounter ended without any crashes or injuries. Thanks to the deputy’s quick response, both motorists and the calf were able to continue their day safely.
Comments Praise Deputy’s Cowboy Skills
The lighthearted rescue quickly entertained social media users, many of whom filled the comments with cow-themed puns. One joked, “FOCOW around and find out,” while another said the deputy simply had to “steer” the calf in the right direction.
Others praised Deputy Hammock for stepping in to protect the animal. One commenter suggested he had earned a cowboy hat to go with his uniform, while another joked that he “must be part border collie” after watching how naturally he guided the calf home.
Several people also appreciated seeing a wholesome police story in their news feed. One commenter wrote that “every life is precious” while thanking the deputy for his efforts, and another said they loved that their community was “still a little bit country,” making the unexpected rescue feel right at home.
