“One of the Scariest Moments Of My Life”: Rental Car Owner Dragged By SUV After Renter Allegedly Used Fake License

A routine car rental in Houston turned into a genuine nightmare for one local business owner, and the whole thing was caught on camera. What should have been a simple handoff of keys ended with the owner getting dragged across a parking lot by his own vehicle.

The owner, who asked not to be identified out of fear of retaliation, says a man rented one of his vehicles using what turned out to be a fake Texas driver’s license. When the owner eventually tracked the SUV down and tried to confront the renter, things went sideways fast. Surveillance footage captured the moment, and it’s the kind of clip that makes your stomach drop a little.

We deal with a lot of stories involving stolen vehicles, key fob hacks, and VIN switching schemes here, but this one hits a little different because it’s a small business owner just trying to get his property back. Renting cars is supposed to be a low-drama transaction. Show your ID, sign some paperwork, drive off. This case is a reminder that the paperwork side of things can be gamed just as easily as the ignition.

According to Houston police, the incident happened on July 17 at the Mustang Inn on Tidwell Road. The man identified by police as Nicholas Yoder was arrested on July 23, reported Click2Houston, nearly a week after the confrontation, and now faces multiple felony charges.

What Actually Happened

Police say the driver’s license used to rent the SUV was fraudulent from the start, meaning Yoder was driving off in a vehicle he technically had no legitimate right to. When the owner located the SUV and approached, he ended up being dragged across the parking lot.

“I’m pretty shaken up about it because I did get dragged by a car,” the owner told KPRC 2. That’s about as understated as it gets for a guy who just had a genuinely dangerous encounter over a rental agreement.

Yoder is now facing charges including Fraud and Use or Possession of Identifying Information, along with Evading Arrest and Detention with a Previous Conviction.

A Long History With The Courts

This is where the story takes an interesting turn. A review of Harris County District Clerk records shows Yoder has been connected to more than 20 felony cases dating back to 2015, a mix of pending, dismissed, and resolved cases over the years.

Andy Kahan with Crime Stoppers of Houston noted that Yoder has multiple felony convictions, including two counts of felon in possession of a weapon, and had only recently been released from prison before this latest arrest.

“Once he was taken into custody, parole issued a warrant. The blue warrant is the most powerful warrant in the state,” Kahan explained.

Our Take

Cases like this always raise the same question: how many chances is too many? We’re not here to weigh in on the justice system, but it’s worth pointing out how much trust rental car businesses have to extend to total strangers based on a piece of plastic that can apparently be faked convincingly enough to fool an experienced owner.

If you run a rental fleet, or even just loan out a car to a friend of a friend, this is a good excuse to double check IDs a little more carefully. A few extra minutes of scrutiny beats getting dragged across a parking lot.
