There are plenty of things people look forward to on the Fourth of July. Fireworks, barbecues, and time with family are usually at the top of the list.
For many pets, though, it’s one of the most stressful days of the entire year. Loud explosions send thousands of dogs running from home every Independence Day, leaving owners hoping they’ll somehow find their way back.
One California family recently experienced that heartbreak firsthand after their dog, Fig, disappeared shortly after the holiday. Fortunately, the story has a much happier ending than many similar cases.
According to the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office, Fig had been missing for nearly 10 days before deputies stepped in and helped reunite the frightened pup with her family in less than 24 hours.

The sheriff’s office said Fig ran away from her home in the Lindsay/Strathmore area after becoming frightened by fireworks and nearby gunfire during the Fourth of July celebrations.
For the next several days, her family searched throughout the area, hoping to find her. According to deputies, even after a good Samaritan attempted to help, Fig still couldn’t make it back home.
Eventually, the family filed a missing-dog report with the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office, giving deputies another opportunity to help locate the pet. In fact, the moment the missing dog report was received, deputies quickly got to work searching for Fig.
Family’s 10-Day Search for Missing Dog Ends With Emotional Reunion
According to the sheriff’s office, it took less than 24 hours for deputies to locate the missing dog and safely reunite her with the family that had spent nearly 10 days wondering if they would ever see her again.
The department shared a video of the emotional reunion as part of its weekly “Feel Good Friday” post, reminding residents that community policing often extends beyond criminal investigations and traffic stops.
