Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is facing a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge after a Friday afternoon crash in Napa County’s wine country. According to the Napa County Sheriff’s Office, the 86-year-old was driving his brown convertible through Yountville when he struck a parked, unoccupied car, briefly stopped, then continued on his way.
A witness who saw the whole thing happen called 911 around 2:30 p.m. and gave deputies a description of the vehicle along with the direction it was headed. That tip paid off fast. A short time later, deputies spotted a California Highway Patrol unit parked behind a damaged brown convertible on Yountville Cross Road, about a quarter mile from the scene. The car had significant front-end damage that matched the collision, and it had become too disabled to drive any further, which is really the only reason this thing got solved as quickly as it did.
When deputies caught up with Pelosi, he reportedly admitted he knew he’d hit something, he just wasn’t sure what. He said he kept driving until the car simply gave out on him. No injuries were reported, and the parked vehicle he hit sustained major damage of its own, with the impact reportedly pushing its front tire up onto the curb.
Unlike Pelosi’s last run-in with Napa County law enforcement, this one didn’t involve alcohol. Deputies gave him a preliminary breath test at the scene and it came back at .00, ruling out DUI entirely. He was not arrested. Instead, the sheriff’s office says it’s referring the case to the Napa County District Attorney’s Office to decide on formal charges, which is standard procedure for this type of misdemeanor.
What Actually Happened in Yountville
The crash occurred on the 6700 block of Yount Street, a stretch of road in the heart of Napa’s wine country that’s usually better known for tasting rooms than traffic incidents. The parked car that got hit was empty at the time, so thankfully nobody was at risk of injury.
Investigators say the damage pattern on both vehicles lines up with Pelosi’s convertible being the one at fault, and that the case now sits with prosecutors to determine what, if anything, comes next.
A Familiar Road for Pelosi
This isn’t Pelosi’s first brush with a Napa County crash report. Back in May 2022, he was involved in a collision that led to a DUI conviction, with a blood alcohol level well above the legal limit at the time. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor DUI causing injury and served jail time, completed a DUI education program, and had an ignition interlock device installed in his car for a year.
That case was clearly a different animal than this one, since alcohol has been ruled out here entirely.

One detail that stands out in the sheriff’s release is that Napa County plans to submit a driver re-evaluation referral to the California DMV, something officials describe as standard practice involving elderly drivers after an incident like this.
It’s not a punishment, just a routine check to make sure everything’s in order behind the wheel going forward. Given Pelosi’s age, it’s a reasonable box to check, and it may be worth keeping an eye on as this story develops further.
