The call came in just before 5:20 p.m. on Sunday, June 29, when Wauconda Fire District crews were dispatched to a pond on the grounds of Mount St. Joseph along the 24000 block of Route 12. What they found on arrival was a vehicle that had punched through a fence and come to rest about 50 feet from the shoreline, submerged up to the windows.
Two firefighters entered the water and swam out to the car to check whether anyone was still inside. The driver’s side window was open and the airbags had deployed, suggesting the vehicle had struck something with enough force to trigger the safety systems. No one was found in or around the vehicle.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office brought in police dogs to try to pick up a trail. The dogs tracked a scent for roughly a quarter of a mile before losing it, leaving investigators with more questions than answers about where the driver went and why.
