What happens when you drive a silver Toyota SUV through one of San Francisco’s most popular parks on a Friday evening, with someone hanging out the window for good measure? Apparently, you find out pretty quickly that a city full of smartphones is not your friend.

Video of the stunt spread across social media almost immediately after it happened, showing the SUV weaving through Dolores Park while a passenger dangled out the window. No one was hurt, but the park was busy, and the footage left little to the imagination about what could have gone wrong. One slip, one unexpected bump, and that passenger’s Friday evening ends very differently.

What set this case apart wasn’t just the video. Someone who witnessed the incident in person actually walked into the Valencia Street police station and filed a report the old-fashioned way. Online chatter helped too, but it was that in-person report that kicked the investigation into motion and ultimately led to an arrest.

Officers in the Tenderloin neighborhood spotted the vehicle the following afternoon and stopped it near Japantown. Behind the wheel was 24-year-old Justice Wray of San Francisco, who was booked on multiple charges including reckless driving and driving without a license.

Getting a Full-Size SUV Into a City Park Is Its Own Achievement

Credit where it’s due: maneuvering a Toyota SUV into Dolores Park is not nothing. The park isn’t designed for it, which makes the whole thing simultaneously more baffling and more impressive from a purely logistical standpoint.

The neighborhood group Dolores Park Ambassadors noted they’ve seen motorbikes pull stunts in the park before, but an SUV was a new one.

No Damage to the Park, But That’s Not Really the Point

San Francisco Rec and Park confirmed there was no damage to the grass or any infrastructure, which is probably the best news in this whole story.

The park itself came out fine. The driver, less so.

The Internet as Witness

This arrest is a decent illustration of how quickly a stunt filmed in public can shift from entertainment to evidence. The video circulated widely, reports came in from multiple directions, and within a day the vehicle was identified and the driver was in custody.

Two people were in the SUV when it was stopped.
