Most golfers spend their Sunday afternoons worrying about sand traps and slow foursomes ahead of them. The regulars at Lakeshore Country Club in Greece, New York, had a different kind of obstacle to contend with last weekend: a red SUV fleeing from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, airborne across the first fairway.
The pursuit originated in the Charlotte area before making its way onto the course just before 5 p.m. on Sunday. The driver crossed a road, cleared a ditch, cut through the first fairway and kept going all the way to the 18th green. At that point, with what one assumes was diminishing options and a failing radiator, the driver bailed out of the still-moving vehicle and took off on foot.
Officers gave chase near the 18th hole and into the surrounding neighborhood. The car, for its part, gave up its radiator on the driving range as a kind of parting gift. A separate video captured the damage left behind on the range, which probably ruined at least a few people’s warm-up routines.
The Greece Police Department clarified it was not involved in the pursuit, noting the chase entered their jurisdiction from Charlotte. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has said it will release more details when it is able to do so.
A Regular Round Turned Into Something Else
Take a look at this video of sheriff’s deputies chasing an SUV through a golf course in Greece. The person who took the video says it happened on Sunday evening near the 18th hole of Lakeshore Country Club. Joe Lauderdale was standing on the first tee box when things took an unexpected turn. A friend called out “heads up,” and Lauderdale naturally expected a stray golf ball. What he got instead was a full police pursuit rolling through the fairway in front of him. He described the scene as “pretty electric,” which is a generous way to put it.
Lauderdale also made note of one officer who parked his car and continued on foot, going so far as to say the deputy must be a golfer himself, given how decisively he committed to the on-course situation.
Dad Grab and Roll
Dom Mangano was on the driving range with his father when he heard sirens, then watched the red SUV veer off the road and head straight toward them. He grabbed his dad, moved out of the path, and once the immediate danger had passed, pulled out his phone to film. He later called a friend to describe what happened, and that friend’s first question was: “Was the car red?” It turned out they had each witnessed different stages of the same chase.
When officers later approached golfers to check on them and ask whether they wanted to press charges, Mangano declined. “I think the guy’s got enough problems on his plate as it is,” he said. Hard to argue with that.
Twenty-Plus Years at Lakeshore, Nothing Like This Before
Mangano has been playing at Lakeshore for over two decades and noted that nothing remotely like this has ever happened before. Lakeshore Country Club has not commented publicly, and a manager was not available when reporters stopped by.
The sheriff’s office has not yet released additional details about the driver or what prompted the original chase.
