If you take your car to a garage or workshop like Auto Zone for repairs or a service, you usually expect the employees there to do the job for you. It is, after all, what they are paid to do, while you can go and relax and wait to find out how your car is.

However, one woman had an experience that seemed very different ot the norm. Posting on TikTok, Brookiec (@babyyb333) posted a video that has over 340,000 views explaining she was left with a diagnostic scanner while the worker walked away.

Brookiec had been handed the OBD reader, which is a system that you plug into the car, which then finds various faults and error codes, and it gives you an idea of what is wrong with the car and what you need to fix. That is usually the job of the worker at the shop you have arrived at.

But according to Brookiec, after she arrived at an AutoZone shop, the employee came out to her car, handed her the OBD reader, and then simply walked away. It appeared Brookiec herself would have to do the work on the car.

What Actually Happened at Autozone?

According to Brookiec, she had gone to the AutoZone facility to have a check engine light looked at. An OBD reader was highly likely to have diagnosed the problem, but she was shocked by what happened when she arrived. After pulling in, one of the workers came to her car and handed her the OBD.

Instead of either giving her instructions on how to use it or doing it himself, the worker simply handed it to her and walked away. “This is why nobody tell me at AutoZone you have to clock in your damn self and figure out your own problems,” said Brookiec. “What the [expletive] What am I doing?” she angrily added, clearly not happy at what had happened.

As you can imagine, this led to some fiery debate in the comments section of the TikTok. On one side, people insisted that AutoZone had actually stopped doing scans and would ask the customer to plug the reader in. However, others said that this wasn’t the case, and that the shop would always plug in the scanner and do the work themselves. It was quite clear that Brookiec wasn’t alone in her experience, but others were equally surprised it had happened.

This Is What Autozone Said About the Situation

A scan of the car is listed as the Fix Finder service on AutoZone’s website, and it is also listed as a free in-store service. They state it is a one-minute scan run by the employee that gives a printed and emailed report of what is wrong with the car. The website also states that an ‘AutoZoner’, ie an employee, will present the results.

However, one employee of the company responded to the situation and said that, as the workers are technically not mechanics but sales associates at the counter, they could get into trouble by doing certain things to a car. Another employee also said that sometimes customers get angry with them for using the vehicle, key, or moving chairs around, so they always ask the customer first if they are happy for them to do it.  So the situation is a little bit murky, but it’s likely that Brookiec is not alone in having had this happen.
