When out drinking with friends, sleeping in your vehicle is safer than getting behind the wheel. Alternatively, it is always good to have a designated driver who doesn’t partake.
However, in this case, a Brest, France resident arranged to spend the night in a friend’s car to avoid potential problems, only to make a huge mistake.
Admittedly, this DUI-related story isn’t as bad as this one, involving a deputy driving the wrong way while drunk and caught in a dramatic traffic stop. It also wasn’t as serious as the story of a teen, drunk driving in an early morning incident that destroyed a fence, the home it surrounded, while crashing into parked cars and ending up in a tree. However, it is bad luck for the vehicle’s owner.
In this case, the man, aged 40, didn’t just get into his friend’s car to nap; after sleeping in the wrong car, he ended up wrecking a motorcycle parked in the street. The owner of that car should, admittedly, have locked his vehicle and wasn’t impressed by what happened, and, of course, the motorcycle owner was pretty upset.
According to the State Forensic Examination Committee, the driver had stayed out late the night before, drinking too much alcohol with his brother. He decided to do the right thing by not returning home and by arranging to spend the night in his friend’s car, parked near an apartment building. That turned out to be his first mistake.
Drunk Man Planned To Sleep off the Alcohol in His Friend’s Car
Reform News reports that the man had found what he believed to be his friend’s car in front of an apartment building, which was unlocked with the keys inside. While planning on getting comfortable and sleeping, he decided to take a short joy ride through the neighborhood and then dozed off, not realizing what he had done.

When the man awoke in the morning, he was confused and didn’t understand what had happened the night before, and decided it was best to head home.
Meanwhile, an investigation into the incident later revealed the fact that the drunken man had mistakenly climbed into someone else’s vehicle, not his friend’s, and that during his short joy ride, he slammed into a parked Yamaha motorcycle.
The Owner of the Yamaha Motorcycle Was Not Impressed
According to the DUI investigation, the owner of the Yamaha motorcycle discovered it the next morning, lying on the ground.
The incident saw damage to the frame of the motorcycle, its plastic components, and a wrecked exhaust pipe.
Driving While Drunk Can Be Expensive
The State Forensic Examination Committee in Belarus assessed the damage to the motorcycle at around US$500. The man will need to compensate the vehicle’s owner for the damage to the bike, as well as pay a fine for driving under the influence of alcohol. No information is available about the owner of the crashed car or how much the driver would pay towards the potential damage to the fender.
This incident reveals the importance of not driving while drunk, but also ensuring that your vehicle is securely locked when you leave it parked at night.
