Viral Video of Freight Train Crashing Into a Septic Tank Truck Is a Reminder for Drivers to Look Both Ways

Railroad crossings with inadequate warnings about oncoming trains could be the perfect recipe for a disaster, and an incident from Virginia just proved that.

In an age where distracted driving is at its peak, courtesy of smartphones and shortening attention spans, motorists must check on either side at railway crossings for oncoming trains to ensure their safety.

While double-checking could be challenging for distracted drivers, the repercussions of not doing so have been well-highlighted by a viral video on social media, in which a freight train smashes through a septic tank truck at a railroad crossing.

Footage suggests the absence of crossing arms and potential warnings that may have alerted the truck driver. But what could have saved him was pure driver instinct.

Footage shows a Norfolk Southern freight train crashing into a septic tank truck at a railroad crossing in Chesapeake, Virginia, destroying the tank entirely as green liquid is splashed all over the road.

According to a Facebook post by the Chesapeake Police Department, the incident occurred on May 14, 2026, at around 4:00 p.m. At the scene of the incident, the officers discovered an adult male who had sustained serious injuries. The post read:

“On May 14, 2026, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Chesapeake Police officers responded to the 2900 block of Yadkin Road for a reported collision involving a vehicle and a train.

“When officers arrived, they discovered that a truck had overturned as a result of the crash. One adult male was transported to a local hospital with life‑threatening injuries.”

The police confirmed that although the crash involved hazardous materials, it did not expose the public to immediate dangers. The post added:

“A minor fuel‑related hazmat situation was identified at the scene; however, there is no immediate danger to the public. Preliminary findings indicate that the truck failed to stop at a posted stop sign prior to the collision.

“This incident remains under active investigation.”

According to a report by WAVY-TV Channel 10, the driver sustained life-threatening injuries, but he was said to be in a stable condition the next day.

Eyewitness Reveals First-Hand Account of Horrific Crash

A Norfolk Southern spokesperson said that the freight train was eastbound when the incident occurred at the Yadkin Road crossing at milepost N9.9 in Chesapeake. None of the crew members aboard the train were injured by the incident.

The viral footage of the incident on social media was originally recorded by Azuriah O’Daniel, who was present at the scene, practicing his hobby of recording trains. Revealing what he saw, O’Daniel said:

“I didn’t even see the truck at first, until, like, he was already going over the tracks, and then he came over the tracks, and the train was already like right here.

“It busted the septic tank on it, the hoses fell off, like the hoses complete, like, flew off of it, like it was the impact was crazy.”

O’Daniel explained that the railway crossing in question was a private one that did not have arms or lights that warn motorists about an oncoming train, something that authorities could consider adding in the wake of this incident.

He added that it is nearly impossible for trains to stop in time like cars, a point that drivers must keep in mind. O’Daniel said:

“I don’t think a lot of people realize that they’re not cars, they don’t have rubber tires, it’s steel rails with steel wheels. When you grind those two together, that’s just instant sparks.”

O’Daniel has advised drivers about railroad crossings, emphasizing that they need to remain vigilant. He said:

“When you go to a train crossing, please always stop and look and listen, always, because sometimes railroad crossings malfunction too. They won’t go down sometimes.”
