A Sunday afternoon trip took a terrifying turn for a Garland, Texas family when a stranger tried to steal their vehicle right out from under them, with seven family members still sitting inside. The father, who was outside the car when the struggle began, fought back and ultimately shot the carjacker, killing him on the spot. The whole thing was captured on surveillance video.
Garland police say the suspect had already caused a scene before targeting the family, crashing into two other vehicles and then immediately jumping out to physically try to force his way into multiple cars across the parking lot near Highway 66 and Dairy Road. Witnesses say his behavior was visibly erratic and alarming well before things escalated to a deadly confrontation.
After nearly a full minute of struggling with the father while trying to drive the car away with the family still inside, the carjacker was shot by the father, who was standing outside the vehicle near the passenger side door. Police arrived to find the suspect dead and the family shaken but physically unharmed.
Garland police say they do not expect to file charges against the father. Lt. Pedro Barineau told reporters the incident appears to be a clear case of self-defense, noting that the whole ordeal unfolded extremely quickly and that the father had no way of knowing whether the suspect was armed.
A Chaotic Scene Long Before the Shooting
Before the family ever knew what was heading their way, the suspect had already been on a destructive path through the parking lot. According to police, he crashed into two parked vehicles, then jumped out and began aggressively trying to get into other cars by force.
Tatiana Starks, who manages the nearby Garland Smoke and Vape shop, watched the chaos unfold from her storefront and pulled out her phone to record it. She watched the man try to force his way into several vehicles at a gas station before things took a more alarming turn.
“You could definitely tell that he was not in his right state of mind,” Starks said. She stopped recording when the man began walking directly toward her, and shortly after, he made his way to the family’s vehicle.
Surveillance Video Captures the Struggle
The surveillance footage tells a story that is difficult to watch. The suspect, wearing a peach shirt, approached the father, who was in white, and a physical confrontation erupted almost immediately. The father struggled against the carjacker as the man tried to take control of the vehicle and drive it away with the rest of the family still inside.
The fight lasted close to a minute. The father, positioned outside the car near the passenger door, ultimately shot the suspect while he was seated in the driver’s seat. Police recovered no weapons on the suspect, but Lt. Barineau emphasized that the use of force throughout the incident was undeniable, and that from the father’s perspective, there was no way to rule out the possibility that the man was armed.
Police Say Self-Defense Appears Clear
Garland law enforcement has been straightforward in its assessment of the situation. Lt. Barineau said plainly, “It seemed to be self-defense. It kind of all happened like really fast.” As of now, the father is not expected to face any criminal charges.
Texas has long upheld strong self-defense protections, including the right to use deadly force to protect oneself or others when a reasonable person would believe their life or safety is at risk. With a carjacker actively trying to drive away with seven people inside a vehicle, legal experts would likely agree the bar for justifiable force was met.
The family walked away without a single physical injury, something Starks called a blessing. “It’s just a blessing that the kids and the family walked away with no injuries,” she said.
What This Incident Reminds Us About Unpredictable Public Threats
Situations like this one serve as a stark reminder that danger can appear in ordinary places at ordinary times. A parking lot on a Sunday afternoon is not where most people expect to face a life-or-death situation, yet this family did exactly that.
A few takeaways stand out from this incident. First, the suspect’s erratic behavior was visible to bystanders well before the attack, which raises questions about whether early intervention from bystanders calling 911 could have changed the outcome entirely. Second, the father’s ability to act under pressure in an extraordinarily stressful situation likely saved his family from a much worse fate. Third, this case underscores why many self-defense advocates argue that situational awareness in public spaces, no matter how mundane, matters.
For Starks, who witnessed more of this incident than she ever wanted to, the lesson is simpler: “I’m just glad that the man was able to protect himself and his family.”
Investigation Into Suspect’s Identity Continues
As of now, Garland police have not been able to identify the deceased suspect. No weapons were found on him, but investigators are continuing to piece together who he was and what led to his erratic behavior that afternoon. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Garland Police Department.
The case remains under investigation, though the focus appears to be on identifying the suspect rather than building any case against the father who fired the shot.

Thank god for g*ns!
