She Brought in Her Car for Repairs, then a Dealership Employee Took It for a Date Night

A routine car repair turned into a disturbing chain of events that lit up serious conversations on the internet, as people debated about trust, accountability, and automobile security at repair facilities.

Kimberly Porter considered herself a loyal and cautious car owner. Over the years, she had owned multiple vehicles and consistently relied on dealerships for maintenance and repairs. Her latest vehicle, a Mercedes C300 AMG, was no exception.

When the car experienced trouble after a breakdown on the interstate, she did what many drivers would do. She had it towed directly to Mercedes-Benz of Collierville dealership, believing it would be safe in professional hands.

For nearly a month, the sedan remained at the dealership. There was nothing unusual about the delay, at least not at first. Then, one Friday evening in January, everything changed.

A Late-Night GPS Alert

Porter received an alert from a GPS tracking app installed in her car. The system was designed to notify her about the car’s movement. Initially, the notification did not seem alarming. The car appeared to be at or near the dealership, which could have meant it was being serviced or repositioned.

However, as time passed, the alerts became more frequent and more concerning.

Late into the night, the data began to show something unexpected. The car was no longer stationary. It was moving away from the dealership.

At first, Porter questioned whether the GPS system was malfunctioning.

Technology can fail, and she tried to rationalize what she was seeing. But as the movement continued and the location changed significantly, doubt turned into fear. By midnight, the situation felt impossible to ignore.

Her thoughts quickly escalated to the worst-case scenario. With car theft becoming more common and increasingly bold, she feared that her car had been stolen directly from the dealership lot.

Instead of waiting until morning, Porter made a decisive move. She got out of bed, followed the GPS coordinates, and began tracking her own car in real time. The journey led her from Collierville to Cordova; a location far removed from where her car was supposed to be.

What she encountered next was both shocking and surreal.

A Shocking Confrontation

In a parking lot, Porter located her vehicle. She stayed nearby, watching and waiting for what comes next. At some point, the individual Mercedes-Benz of Collierville employee, who had been using the car returned. Authorities became involved, and the situation escalated quickly.

The man, who reportedly told the police that he’d been out on a date, was eventually taken into custody and placed in handcuffs.

For Porter, the moment brought as much anger as relief. Relief that her car had been found. Anger at the circumstances that led to it being taken in the first place.

The questions began to pile up. How did someone gain access to her vehicle? Why was it being driven miles away from the dealership? What safeguards, if any, were in place to prevent such an incident?

Even more troubling was the potential risk. Porter later reflected on what could have happened if the situation had ended worse than impressing a girlfriend with a sleek Mercedes. If the driver had caused an accident or harmed someone, the consequences could have been devastating, both legally and personally.

A Fierce Conversation on Trust

The incident did not end with the recovery of the vehicle. Criminal charges were filed, and the case opened a broader conversation about accountability within repair facilities. Customers trust these businesses with valuable property, often assuming a level of security that may not always be guaranteed.

Social media users responding to this story did not hold back:

As a Mercedes owner, I don’t use the dealership at all here. I use certified Mercedes service shop here in Memphis. Yes, they use OEM parts for repairs.

Funny how this would happen when there is a fleet of loaners, cars ready to go to auction, used cars, and factory demos. He could have taken a lease return being reconditioned for the front line. The final irony is no one is impressed by driving a Mercedes. everyone has one because of cheap leasing. and definitely not a C300.
