Southern California began 2026 under a curtain of relentless rain, and with it came scenes that looked more like disaster movie set pieces than everyday commutes. Flood watches were issued across the region as storms dumped heavy precipitation from New Year’s Eve into New Year’s Day. Streets in parts of San Diego and Orange County transformed into temporary rivers, swallowing curbs, medians and in some cases entire vehicles.
One clip posted to X captured the internet’s attention more than any other. It showed a brown or oxblood colored Tesla, likely a Model Y based on its silhouette, wading through a street so deeply flooded that water reached above the hood and lapped at the side mirrors. The car appeared almost fully submerged at moments, yet it continued pushing forward for an astonishing distance before emerging on higher ground.
The video echoed similar scenes documented in past Southern California floods, including a 2024 incident in downtown San Diego where a Tesla was filmed navigating a heavily flooded street while other cars stalled around it. But this new clip was even more dramatic. The vehicle seemed to float at times, propelled not by traction but by the rotation of its wheels acting like underwater paddles.
How Did It Survive?

Tesla vehicles are not designed to be boats, but they are sealed far more tightly than traditional gasoline cars. Their battery packs are enclosed in rigid, waterproof casings. High voltage components are isolated and protected. The absence of an air intake means there is no engine to hydrolock.
Elon Musk has previously stated that Teslas can float for short periods and move through water using wheel thrust, although he has also emphasized that this is not recommended. Thanks to this video, the man stands vindicated.
The feat seen in the video was far beyond what any owner manual would condone. The driver was lucky. Water intrusion can cause delayed electrical failures, corrosion and sensor damage. This is, of course, why Tesla’s warranty explicitly excludes water damage.
What About the Cabin Filters?
Several commenters asked whether the cabin filters would be ruined. Cabin air enters through vents near the base of the windshield. If water rises above that point, the filters can become soaked. A saturated filter can lead to mold, odors and reduced HVAC performance. Replacement is inexpensive, but if water reaches the blower motor or HVAC electronics, repairs can become costly.
What About Electrocution?
Another viewer wondered whether the driver risked electrocution given Tesla’s high voltage systems, which typically operate between 350 and 450 volts depending on model. Some newer architectures can reach higher voltages, but the principle remains the same.
Tesla’s battery and power electronics are designed with multiple layers of insulation and automatic shutoff systems. If a short is detected, the car isolates the high voltage system. This is why even submerged Teslas do not pose an electrocution hazard to occupants or first responders under normal circumstances.
Why Cybertruck Is Different
One commenter pointed out that the Cybertruck includes a feature called Wade Mode. This system pressurizes the battery pack to help prevent water intrusion during deep water crossings. It is specifically engineered for such scenarios. Other Tesla models do not have this feature, which is why experts and Tesla itself warn against attempting similar stunts unless it is a true emergency.

The viral clip may look like a triumph of engineering, but it also illustrates the dangers of driving through floodwaters. Even a few inches of moving water can sweep a vehicle away. Hidden debris, open manholes and sudden depth changes can turn a daring crossing into a fatal mistake.
Southern California’s New Year storms created dramatic scenes across the region, and this Tesla’s improbable journey through a submerged street will be remembered as one of them. But for every viewer cheering the car’s resilience, there are engineers quietly hoping the driver schedules a service appointment soon.
