On certain days, city driving can feel like a chore, especially during rush hour. You find yourself stuck in traffic, surrounded by cars, left to admire the view of a four-wheeled rear bumper.

But with the right car, we believe multiple options offer the best experience on your journey from point A to point B. Even in stop-and-go city traffic, your drive should be comfortable behind the wheel of an economical, easy-to-handle, and convenience-packed car.

City Car Requirements

We’ve already mentioned the three largest factors: focusing on cars that are economical, comfortable, and easy to drive. In today’s market, it cannot be overstated how trouble-free it is to find cars that meet these specific criteria.

However, when navigating metropolitan areas on the roads, another necessity becomes crucial, and here’s where a smaller car is the best approach. Compact and city cars offer flexibility when navigating the city’s wide roads, providing a smoother experience in stop-start traffic.

In addition, all the cars we’ve listed share one standout feature — they are all used. Not every model will have the latest technology, but many modern conveniences can be added as an extra incentive for a relatively small cost.

Taking this all into account, we’ve identified some of the best city cars under $25,000 on several reputable used car listing sites, ensuring you get the most value for every single dollar spent on one of these vehicles.

2017 Fiat 500

The second-generation Fiat 500 was purposely built and designed for city driving. Its size allows for excellent maneuverability between lanes, making it ideal for busy streets.

A standout and very practical feature for those on urban roads, the car has a “City” button on all its models. Motorpoint states that when the button is pressed, the 500’s steering becomes a lot lighter, allowing for a smoother experience when parking, gear shifting, and manoeuvring out of narrow spaces.

While the 500 is typically a 3-door, four people can sit in the car itself, but be mindful that storage space may be limited with that many people. We’ve found a 2012 model listing on CarGurus for just $5,400.

Ford Fiesta

The Ford Fiesta has been in production for several decades. Its versatility makes it a great car for all drivers, and its adaptability to city streets goes hand in hand, especially in densely populated areas.

We’ve selected the 2011 – 2019 years specifically. It’s affordable to run, you can choose between 3 and 5 doors, and its handling and performance make it a comfortable ride. CarGurus offers a used 2016 model for only $6,495, meaning the rest of the money could go to adding additional accessories.

If you ever visit some of the world’s largest metropolitan cities, like New York City, Tokyo, or London, you’ll find the Toyota Prius in abundance everywhere. This model is one of the world’s best-selling cars.

The penultimate year of production for the third-generation model, 2015, was truly a generational vehicle, to say the least. Its full hybrid system allows the car to be driven on electric power, and this model also introduced the first solar-powered ventilation air conditioning system. TrueCar has this decade-old car up for grabs at $15,995.

All cars within our budget don’t have to be extremely old; you can pick up a 2025 specification second-generation Nissan Leaf for $21,895 on Edmunds. Though we have a 2023 picture above, this specific model has an estimated 225 to 235-mile range, but this could be a temporary fix until the third generation’s release in Q4 of 2025.

Released later this year, the Japanese manufacturer’s trailblazing electric car reached greater heights. The Electric Car Scheme highlights its best feature is that the vehicle can last for 373 miles on a single charge, making this extremely ideal for a long-distance trip that roams through the busy streets.

Audi’s exquisite A3 e-tron offers three powertrain modes: Battery Hold, Hybrid, and EV. AutoExpress highlights that these functions allow for efficient driving, and its spacious interior ensures a luxurious experience, setting it apart from the smaller city cars mentioned earlier.

This generation of A3 e-tron models was produced from 2014 to 2018, and a 2017 edition is on the market for $18,450. However, it’s vitally important to note that the battery-only mode is limited to just 29 miles — something we want to keep in mind for users seeking an electric experience.

2015 BMW i3

While many BMW models may be out of reach for some buyers, the second-hand market makes the i3 surprisingly accessible. For just under $11,599, a 2015 model Edmunds offers is one of the best prices on the market.

The first generation models have an estimated range of 81 miles, and Electric Road admits this is a “great choice for city driving.” Realistically, for an electric car, the only hindrance would be waiting for it to charge.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk8

When navigating concrete roads, the iconic Volkswagen Golf GTI is a no-brainer option. Its compact size is a real advantage, and its comfortable interior makes standstill traffic much more bearable.

No matter the generation, the Golf GTI remains a consistently reliable car that delivers. Edmunds has a 2022 model listed for $22,950, marking the introduction of the eighth generation models that entered American soil that same year.

2017 Honda Fit

Five years ago, the Honda Fit halted production in America, but its offering still makes it a valuable option on the second-hand market. Known for its ideal size and reliability, the Fit is perfect for getting from A to B with minimal fuss.

We’ve focused purely on the third-generation model, a hatchback that offers a comfortable interior. Regardless of the trim level available, it remains an excellent choice for anyone seeking an economical car well-suited to the urban environment. Edmunds provides a listing of a car that has just over 20,000 miles on the clock, and with proper care, it should serve reliably for years to come and make the $20,000 price tag a genuine bargain.

Mazda3 i Grand Touring

The third generation marked a significant shift in Mazda’s approach to the Mazda3, with the Japanese manufacturer upgrading the model in all departments. This edition improved interior build quality and offered multiple trim levels, allowing buyers to choose based on their individual preferences.

Japanese manufacturers are often recognized as one of the best in the industry for reliability, which led us to choose the 2013 Mazda3 i Grand Touring. It is listed on Edmunds for only $8,995. Though this model is twelve years old, its precise handling makes it incredibly easy to adapt to.

When it comes to choosing a small car for the road, the Chevrolet Sonic is a suitable option. The first-generation version stands out as an extremely valuable and affordable option for exploring narrow lanes. Whether you prefer a sedan or a hatchback, the Sonic offers both body styles to tailor to your needs. ISeeCars discusses the Hatchback’s strengths in both reliability and safety, giving it an overall rating of 8.9 out of 10.

Edmunds, as always, showcases options that are great value for money. An LT Hatchback trim is currently available for $13,998, with just over 18,000 miles on the clock. For added comfort during scorching hot, stop-and-go traffic, enjoy the luxury of complimentary heated seats.

2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV Premier

Both the LT and Premier trims offer valuable features tailored to different preferences. According to discussions on the BoltEV subreddit, customers state the LT trim leans more toward technology-focused features, while the Premier trim prioritizes comfort. Since the car is now six years old, customers have the flexibility to mix and match features to suit their preferences best.

On Edmunds, this 2019 Premier trim offers an estimated range of 237 and 257 miles, setting you back only $12,500. A very reasonable deal, right?
