Subaru of America has revealed the 2026 Subaru Outback at the 2025 New York International Auto Show, marking the 30th anniversary of the beloved SUV. While it maintains its hallmark all-wheel-drive capability, the latest model steps confidently into the future with cutting-edge driver assist systems, a massive 12.1-inch touchscreen, and a fully digital instrument cluster that brings modern convenience and safety to the forefront.

According to an official statement from Subaru, the 2026 Outback aims to stay true to its roots as a practical everyday SUV, although it will have a more aggressive and rugged appearance this time around. With a boxier profile and flatter roofline, the Outback has impressive cargo space and load capacity. In fact, this is the first time that the Outback will have a lateral load capacity of up to 220 pounds to allow for a hammock or clothesline, adding to its off-road aesthetic and capabilities.

Inside, the Outback feels more like a comfy, high-end ride than a rugged trail buddy. It’s full of smooth finishes, cool tech, and little details that make everyday driving feel easier and more enjoyable — and that might be the biggest change of all.

A Comfy, Tech-Savvy Interior

The 12.1-inch infotainment display and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster bring the Outback into the modern world (which may not be a hit with every Subaru fan). The touchscreen allows drivers to quickly access navigation, music, communication, and plenty of important, current vehicle information. There’s also cloud-based voice recognition and a new EyeSight-focused Mode that enlarges on-screen views of nearby vehicles and road markings, helping drivers see the road ahead and its traffic more easily.

Heading into the back seat, the 2026 Outback has more space for passengers and their stuff than ever before. This is thanks to a two-inch taller roofline and 34.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity. The press release pointed out that both the driver and passengers will have more headroom and more opportunity to stretch their legs. Sound-absorbing materials on the roof and headliner also reduce noise by 10%, making it even more comfortable and relaxing inside. Little touches like extra bottle holders and a built-in smartphone clip add a surprising sense of everyday luxury.

The 2026 Subaru Outback will come equipped with EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, including safety features like adaptive cruise control, lane centering, pre-collision braking, and acceleration override assist. It also has technology like the Highway Hands Free Assist for up to 85 miles per hour. This is the first Subaru to have Emergency Stop Assist and Safe Lane Selection that activate if the driver becomes unresponsive to warnings while using Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control

2026 Subaru Outback Performance

The Outback will have an updated performance from earlier models, including a revised 2.5-liter Subaru Boxer engine that produces 180 horsepower, and a Lineartronic CVT with eight-speed manual shift mode and symmetrical all-wheel drive. The higher trim Outback options, like the Wilderness and XT, have even more engine power thanks to a turbocharged 2.4-liter with 260 hp.

However, all variations of the Outback will have a revised X-MODE, which helps the SUV perform better on a variety of road conditions. It also has the WRX’s dual-pinion electronic power steering rack for more direct and responsive steering. The Outback also offers 8.7 inches of ground clearance, giving it the confidence to handle uneven roads and light off-road trails. It’s more than ready for tougher terrain if drivers want to push a little further.

Right now, older Subaru Outback models still sell for around $6,000 to $8,000 — making them a solid pick for anyone looking for a budget-friendly SUV that’s built to last and ready for just about anything. The Outback has continued to be a popular choice for families and retirees alike throughout the years, and Subaru fans are hoping the 2026 model will be an elevated Outback experience. But the big question remains: can it keep its rugged heart in this new, more luxurious skin?
