The garage door opened onto a 1986 Pontiac Firebird that clearly hadn’t enjoyed much attention in a very long time. Dust covered the body, the tires were worn out, the driver’s door was stuck, and evidence of small animals had accumulated throughout the car.
Its owner, now 83, had held onto the Pontiac for decades and still considered it his pride and joy. His daughter Candace wanted to see that connection restored, so she contacted a team willing to tackle far more than a quick wash.
WD Detailing documented the project on YouTube after Candace asked the channel to help revive her father’s Firebird. The plan was to clean the car thoroughly, determine whether it could still run, and, if everything went well, return it in condition for Father and Daughter to enjoy together.
That turned out to require plenty of work before anyone could think about a reunion drive. The Firebird had been sitting long enough for dirt, deteriorated components, and unwanted occupants to turn a straightforward detail into a much larger revival.
The Firebird Had Become A Home For Wildlife
Getting the Pontiac out of the garage presented the first challenge because the driver’s door refused to open. Once the crew freed it and brought the car back to the shop, they discovered leaves, debris, and what appeared to be nesting material packed around the engine bay.
The surprises continued during the wash when a live mouse appeared on the hood before being safely relocated outside. Additional nests and evidence of mice were later found inside the cabin, including beneath the rear seats and around the factory red carpeting.
That meant the interior required considerably more than vacuuming. WD Detailing used enzyme cleaners, hot-water extraction, and ozone treatment to clean and sanitize the carpets, seats, and other surfaces before reassembling the cabin.
Getting The V8 Running Was The Bigger Test
The mechanical condition initially looked uncertain, with disconnected vacuum lines, damaged plug wires, and a missing or deteriorated airbox among the problems under the hood. Fortunately, the engine still contained oil, and the fuel pump came to life once power was applied.
Fresh gasoline and replacement ignition wires eventually got the V8 running, although it initially sounded as if it had a misfire. The team traced some of the rough running to the air-intake setup and suspected a fouled plug or wire was contributing as the engine gradually began sounding healthier.
More importantly, the Firebird could move and stop under its own power. That allowed the crew to move ahead with its promise to make the Pontiac usable again rather than simply making it presentable.
Decades Of Dirt Hid Surprisingly Good Paint
Once the grime started coming off, the Firebird turned out to have survived storage better than its first appearance suggested. Its Flame Red Metallic paint showed some oxidation and light scratches, but WD Detailing found enough healthy finish underneath to bring much of the shine back with careful polishing.
The car also retained several distinctly 1980s touches, including T-tops, a red interior, and paint-matched aftermarket rear-window louvers. The intricate wheels were thoroughly cleaned, then fitted with fresh tires because the old rubber was too worn to safely put back into service.
A missing wheel center cap that the owner had mentioned was also replaced before the car went home. By then, the dusty Pontiac that had emerged from the crowded garage looked dramatically closer to the car its owner remembered.
The Owner Finally Got Back Behind The Wheel
WD Detailing initially teased the owner by claiming the Firebird couldn’t be made to run before starting it nearby. The sound immediately gave the surprise away, and seeing the freshly cleaned Pontiac brought back memories before he and Candace climbed inside.
The pair then took the Firebird out together, marking a return to the road after years away from regular use. According to the video, the owner headed straight to a mechanic afterward so the remaining mechanical work could continue.
The project therefore wasn’t a complete mechanical restoration, and the Firebird still had work ahead of it. For its 83-year-old owner, though, seeing the car clean, running, and moving again was enough to turn an old garage resident back into something he could finally enjoy.
