A man in Gwinnett County, Georgia, thought it was a smart idea to try to outrun a police dog, and immediately met the magnitude of his mistake. He now faces charges for allegedly breaking into a car, stealing items, and renting a vehicle with stolen credit cards.
According to the Gwinnett County Police Department (GCPD), the incident occurred back on May 25. At the time, officers initially responded to a local parking lot, where a woman was waiting for them.
Upon arrival, they learned that the woman’s vehicle had been broken into. Furthermore, her wallet and the credit cards stored inside it were gone.
However, police officers had a lead. The victim showed them various unauthorized charges on her bank account. One of them was from a car rental company, which means that the one responsible was now behind the wheel.
Rental Vehicle Found
Recently shared bodycam footage showed the GCPD officer interviewing the woman. Distraught, she relayed the information to the cops, who then began investigating and contacted the company in question.
Shortly after, officers received information about the rental vehicle. A master police officer and his K-9 partner, Mako, located it.
A traffic stop was conducted as soon as the patrol car caught up to the gray sedan. The vehicle continued traveling on the road until it reached a parking lot.
Outrunning a Police Dog
The vehicle stopped in the middle of the area on top of several parking spots. After the vehicle suddenly braked, a man jumped out and sprinted away. He was later identified as Jayelin Hureskin.
The officer joined him alongside K-9 Mako, both of them running behind the alleged thief. The cop screamed at the man to stop and instructed Mako to follow and stop him.
“You’re gonna get bit!” the officer said. Hureskin, meanwhile, turned around and changed his direction while running on the sidewalk.
10+ Active Warrants
The foot pursuit lasted less than a minute. Mako caught up with the man, who was then seen lying on the ground and being handcuffed.
The man was taken into custody and placed in the back of the patrol car. Meanwhile, the officer congratulated Mako for a job well done.
Jayelin Hureskin faces multiple charges. These include entering an automobile with the intent to commit theft or a felony, financial transaction card fraud, financial transaction card theft, willful obstruction of law enforcement officers, failure to obey signs or traffic control devices, and pedestrian unsafe entry into the roadway.
Furthermore, the GCPD later found that Hureskin had more than 10 active arrest warrants in the surrounding counties. His arrest, therefore, was “a win on more than one foot,” the police department said.
