A Montana crash near Norris Hot Springs is going viral after an SUV somehow left Highway 84 and ended up resting on top of a garage roof on Wednesday morning.
According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews responded around 7:39 a.m. near mile marker 1 after the vehicle went off the roadway and landed on the structure. One person was transported to a hospital for evaluation, while the Montana Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident.
Photos from the scene quickly spread online because the crash almost did not look real. The SUV somehow came to rest on top of the garage without completely crushing the roof underneath it, leading many commenters to joke that the builder deserved some kind of award.
While the scene looks almost impossible at first glance, the terrain beside the garage rises close to roof height on one side of the structure, making it easier to understand how the SUV could have ended up perched there. What remains unclear is why the vehicle left the roadway in the first place.
Even local authorities admitted the scene looked unbelievable. Madison County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Jennifer Martens told the Bozeman Daily Chronicle that many seasoned officers had never seen anything like it, adding that the photo “almost looked AI-generated.”
Authorities Say the Crash Is Still Under Investigation
According to the sheriff’s office, the crash happened near Norris Hot Springs along Montana Highway 84. Responding agencies included Harrison Volunteer Fire, Madison County Emergency Management, Madison Valley EMS, Montana Highway Patrol, and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials have not yet released details explaining how the SUV ended up on the garage roof, and authorities have not publicly identified the driver.
While the cause of the crash remains unclear, many people online immediately focused on one obvious detail visible in the photos: the garage itself somehow held together remarkably well despite supporting the SUV’s weight.
“That is a well-built garage,” Martens told the Chronicle. “It barely dented the roof.”
The Garage Somehow Became the Star of the Story
As photos from the crash spread online, social media users quickly turned the bizarre scene into a running joke about the strength of the garage.
One commenter wrote, “Whoever did that roof should use that as an advertisement for new roof customers.”
Another joked, “Their roofs will hold heavy snowpack and full-size SUVs.”
Several commenters also posted variations of the classic internet line often used for unusual crash photos, repeatedly joking, “You can’t park there.”
Others were simply amazed that the structure did not completely collapse under the SUV’s weight.
“Who built that house?” another commenter asked. “Can I get their contact info?”
Fortunately, the Crash Does Not Appear To Have Been Worse
A few commenters pointed out that if the garage had not stopped the SUV, the crash potentially could have ended much worse, depending on how far the vehicle might have continued traveling.
Fortunately, officials only confirmed that one person was transported to the hospital for evaluation, and no additional injuries had been publicly announced as of Wednesday afternoon.
For now, the crash remains under investigation by the Montana Highway Patrol as the internet continues trying to figure out exactly how an SUV ended up parked on top of a garage in rural Montana.
