Volkswagen Tiguan Owner Faces Major Engine Repair at Just 65,000 Miles: “What Would You Do? Is My Engine Toast?”

A Volkswagen Tiguan owner is thinking about trading in an SUV with just 65,000 miles. The owner bought it new and kept up with maintenance, but the engine now needs a major repair. A mechanic says the cylinder head should be replaced.

The first warning came less than 5,000 miles after an oil change. The 2022 Tiguan SE 4Motion was running low on oil, and a repair shop blamed a worn part in the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system. The owner wasn’t sure the shop was right and chose not to have it fixed.

Later, the engine began shaking while idling and seemed to need more gas to get moving, and the check-engine light came on. This time, the shop found worn valve guides, which help keep the engine’s valves moving in the right direction.

In an October 2026 Reddit post, the owner asked whether to pay for a new cylinder head or trade in the SUV. There was another worry. If the engine had been burning too much oil, could other parts already be damaged?

Other Volkswagen Tiguan owners have reported similar problems. In October 2025, the Automobile Protection Association, a Canadian consumer group, shared reports of Tiguans burning too much oil.

The group looked at problems in 2018–2024 models, including engines with worn valve guides. One owner had the seals around the engine’s valves replaced under warranty. That seemed to fix the oil problem, but it returned about a year later.

By then, the warranty had ended. A dealership found worn valve guides and gave the owner a $7,000 estimate to replace the cylinder head. However, the group did not find that every Tiguan with an oil problem needed this repair.

Still, the case is close to what the Reddit owner says happened, right down to the worn valve guides.

Past the Limit

Volkswagen’s standard new-car warranty lasts four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. With 65,000 miles on the SUV, the Reddit owner is already 15,000 miles past the mileage limit.

Replacing a cylinder head is a big job. A mechanic has to take apart much of the top of the engine to get the old part out and fit the new one.

Paying for that work could keep the Tiguan on the road. But the owner worries the engine may have other damage. Trading it in would mean trying to sell a vehicle that still needs an expensive repair.

The owner hasn’t shared a final decision. What began with a low-oil warning and a suggested PCV repair has now reached the point where a shop wants to replace the cylinder head.
