Street takeovers across the U.S. are on the rise, and authorities are under increasing pressure to find ways to protect residents, their property, and their lives from these coordinated acts of chaos.

Nowadays, street takeovers are not just limited to cars doing burnouts or teens involving themselves in fist fights. They extend to the destruction of public and private property. Then there’s also gun violence that gets reported from these takeovers.

Not to mention the use of stolen cars, drugs, life-threatening injuries, and even death. Now, a street takeover reported from Chicago involves a car explosion.

With troublemakers finding new ways to create chaos, the authorities need to pull their socks up to address the issue directly at this stage, before perpetrators get more creative with their destructive acts.

With increasing street takeover incidents in Chicago, Alderman Raymond Lopez, a democrat, has warned about many more that could strike the city this summer, revealing that the city’s mayor, Brandon Johnson, needs to take control of the situation.

Lopez told Fox 32 Chicago that current policies hold the police back from addressing street takeovers the right way. He said:

“I do not believe that Mayor Brandon Johnson is doing enough to tamper down these activities. What we have seen is Chicago has now become a destination location for illegal street takeovers like this where hundreds of youth are encouraged to descend on a location, and whether it’s to do mob action, regardless of if he likes the term or not, illegal street takeovers with our vehicles or other activities that are criminal, people know to come here.”

Lopez added that the teens know they can get away with their acts, and the fact that the police have limited powers, which prevents officers from taking a tough stance. He said:

“They know they can get away with it, and they know that oftentimes our police are handcuffed themselves from stopping and interceding at these events.”

Police Inaction Despite Clues Being Available in Plain Sight on Social Media

Lopez revealed that the clues are out there on several social media platforms for the police to act on, but no action is taken. He said:

“We’ve never done what it takes to authorize our officers to fully engage with these individuals, to box them in, to corral them so that they can’t escape, to arrest them, to impound their vehicles like the law requires us to do.

“And we have never really pursued who is behind the promotions of these events on social media. We know that they are spread online through Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, and others, but yet we do almost nothing to find who is at the root of those posts of these gatherings.”

No Arrests Made Despite Car Explosion During Last Weekend’s Street Takeover

The police reportedly made no arrests after last weekend’s takeover, which saw teens destroy a car in the Gresham neighborhood. A video of the incident on Instagram shows a few teens throwing objects at the silver car’s cracked windshield, while another teen threw something on the driver’s seat that was on fire. They then ran away to save themselves from an explosion that occurred inside the car.

Last week, Chicago’s mayor warned residents of a potential street takeover in Hyde Park on X. However, he used a softer approach, describing the potential takeover as a “teen trend.” He wrote:

“Chicago, there are credible reports of a teen trend forming in Hyde Park later today.

“Parents, be aware of where your children are going this evening. DO NOT allow your children to attend one of these gatherings; they are dangerous and can often turn violent.

“Together we can keep our youth and our communities safe.”
