Two men in Sealy, Texas, are facing theft charges after they were allegedly caught with around 32,000 pounds of precious metal, all loaded up on an 18-wheeler. Approximately, that’s $272,000 worth of stolen goods.
According to the Sealy Police Department (SPD), the incident took place in the 5000 block of NW IH-10 Frontage Road. On an unspecified date, an organized cargo theft took place.
The police department stated that the investigation began when around 32,000 pounds of precious metal was stolen from a business. Although the exact precious metal in question was not mentioned, the value of the five-figure amount was calculated at approximately $272,000.
Recovering the stolen goods was essential. As a result, the SPD, with its patrol officers and K-9 units, worked with the business to bring the suspects to justice.
Suspects Caught With Cargo
This coordinated effort paid off. Just as the two suspects were leaving the property with the stolen cargo, they were stopped and detained by officers, the SPD said.
The suspects were no strangers to the business in question. The police said that they had previously “visited” earlier in July and had committed a similar cargo theft, although no specifics were disclosed.
The stolen cargo was recovered and unloaded. Business and precious metals met once again, and things got back to normal.
18-Wheeler Secured, Suspects Identified
Meanwhile, both the semi-truck and its trailer were held for possible seizure. The 18-wheeler is now secured in storage, pending further investigation.
Additionally, the SPD announced that ALPR technology was used during the investigation. This means that the use of high-speed, computer-controlled cameras was vital for the apprehension of both suspects.
The suspects were identified as 25-year-old Rahual Phore and 36-year-old Virender Phore. They are now facing first-degree theft of cargo valued at $200,000 or more.
Stolen Cargo to Life in Prison
This alleged cargo theft could mean pretty bad news for both men. State law indicates that, should they be convicted of the felony charge, they could receive a sentence of 5 to 99 years.
However, both Phores could spend the rest of their lives in prison, as the maximum sentence for the charge, a first-degree felony, is life. Additionally, they could be ordered to pay a fine of up to $10,000, not counting a restitution penalty.
Currently, the investigation remains active. The SPD detailed that more charges are expected to be filed. The police department added, “All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”
