A tiny kitten had a frightening day above a Florida highway, but somehow came through an extraordinary ordeal alive.
The kitten was stranded along Interstate 275 in St. Petersburg on Friday morning when a passerby spotted it and called for help. What followed was a rescue involving multiple agencies, a sudden 55-foot fall, and a remarkably hopeful, positive ending.
For such a small animal, the setting could hardly have been more dangerous.
The kitten was discovered along northbound I-275 over 3rd Avenue South, an elevated section of highway where there was little room for error.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers and Road Rangers arrived after receiving the call and located the stranded feline. But the kitten was frightened, and getting it to safety would prove far from simple.
The Kitten Kept Trying To Get Away
When rescuers attempted to help, the kitten jumped from the highway onto an adjacent signpost.
Pinellas County Animal Control and the St. Petersburg Fire Department also arrived to assist, giving the frightened animal even more people working to get it out of danger.
Then, before the rescue could be completed, the kitten jumped again. This time, there was nowhere else to climb. The kitten fell approximately 55 feet from the signpost to the ground below.
It was a moment that could have ended tragically, but when FHP troopers and Animal Control officers found the kitten, it was still alive.
The animal was recovered in fair condition and transported by Animal Control for medical care and evaluation. After everything it had endured, the tiny kitten had made it through.
Eight Lives Left for a Little Survivor
There are still unanswered questions surrounding the kitten. FHP has not said how it ended up on the elevated highway or whether it has an owner.
For now, the priority is making sure the animal receives the care it needs.
Some rescues are remembered because of how difficult they were. This one may be remembered because of the little animal at the center of it: a kitten that found itself stranded high above a busy Florida interstate, took a 55-foot fall and somehow lived to be rescued.
