‘They don’t make ’em like they used to’ is a statement you’re likely to hear many times in car enthusiast circles, especially from older car guys who swear that cars were so much better when they were growing up. From engineering, performance, and technology standpoints, it’s hard to agree with such a statement when you look at the cars we have today, which are constantly breaking records and pushing boundaries. However, from a design perspective, it’s plausible. Even though design is subjective, cars of old do have a charm about them that draws you in based purely on looks. One thing that unites both sides of this argument is restomods, as they combine classic designs with modern components.

Retro Designs, a restomod company based in Harrisburg, North Carolina, recently published a video on their YouTube channel that shows how to bring an old legend back to life. In the video, the team works on a 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE, giving it a comprehensive modernization with contemporary mechanical and electronic components while retaining the original factory look and charm.

A Timeless Mercedes-Benz Design, Carefully Preserved

Penned by legendary French designer Paul Bracq, the 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE is an icon of understated elegance, blending hand-built craftsmanship with refined grand-touring manners. Its signature pillarless profile and vertically stacked headlights define a timeless silhouette that remains a benchmark for luxury. By 1969, the W111 coupe had already established itself as one of Mercedes-Benz’s most elegant designs.

The team at Retro Designs wanted to keep everything about the exterior as original as possible. The 280 SE restomod keeps its exterior very close to factory specification, emphasizing elegance and restraint over flashy customization. Retro Designs shaved the sunroof for a cleaner roofline and finished the car in Irish Green, chosen for its classic, timeless character. The chrome trim was restored, and the body preserved the original Mercedes proportions and styling cues. Custom billet wheels by Evod Industries were made to resemble factory hubcaps while allowing a larger wheel size, and they feature floating Mercedes emblems that stay upright as the car moves.

An AMG V8 Transforms the 280 SE Without Losing Its Roots

Now, this is the ‘restomod’ part of the video. Retro Designs approached the 280 SE’s restomod with one clear rule: keep the powertrain in the Mercedes-Benz family. The car originally used a 2.8-liter inline-six, but the shop replaced it with a 5.4-liter AMG M113 V8 sourced from a 2006 C55 AMG and paired it with a Mercedes 722.6 five-speed automatic. Updated coverage of the build says the shop used a 5.4-liter AMG M113 V8 sourced from a 2006 C55 AMG.

The result is a huge jump in performance. Updated coverage of the build says Retro Designs is targeting roughly 640 horsepower, about four times the output of the original 160 hp six-cylinder. Just as importantly, the shop says the five-speed automatic was chosen because it fit without requiring changes to the center tunnel, which helped preserve the car’s original character.

The Cabin Blends Vintage Charm With Modern Comfort

Inside, Retro Designs followed the same philosophy as the exterior: preserve the elegance of the original 280 SE while adding modern comfort and usability. The factory dash was retained, while Dakota Digital created one-off gauges that preserve the look of the original Mercedes instruments while bringing in modern functionality.

The wood trim and chrome were restored to maintain the car’s classic character, and a modern stereo system was discreetly integrated. Custom door panels with accent lighting added a subtle bespoke touch, while Vintage Air climate control was engineered to work with the original dash and firewall. The result is a cabin that preserves the original car’s elegance while adding the convenience expected of a modern grand tourer.

Why the Original Mercedes-Benz 280 SE Remains So Desirable

The W111 280 SE coupe is one of Mercedes-Benz’s most elegant postwar designs, with its pillarless hardtop profile, hand-built feel, and understated luxury. Introduced in 1968, the six-cylinder 280 SE used a 2.8-liter inline-six making 160 hp, while the later 280 SE 3.5 V8 became the most coveted version thanks to its added performance and rarity. This Retro Designs build started life as the less valuable six-cylinder car, not a factory V8.

That distinction matters in the market. Top money is reserved for V8-powered 280 SE 3.5 coupes, with recent auction sales reaching about $134,400, while six-cylinder 280 SE coupes trade far lower on average, making them smart restomod candidates.

In the end, this is the kind of restomod that respects the car it started with. By preserving the W111 coupe’s style and character while adding V8 performance and contemporary amenities, Retro Designs created a Mercedes that feels both authentic and reimagined.
