The First-Ever Electric Chevy Bel Air Uses a Tesla Model 3 Drivetrain

A 1950s Chevrolet Bel Air parked at a Tesla Supercharger is an unusual sight, especially when it actually needs electricity. For West Coast Customs, that unlikely combination became the centerpiece of an ambitious project involving two cars from completely different eras.

The California customization shop has built plenty of outrageous vehicles over the years, but this assignment demanded a different approach. Instead of simply replacing a classic V8 with an electric motor, the team wanted to preserve as much as possible of a modern Tesla underneath the Chevrolet’s vintage bodywork.

As documented on the West Coast Customs YouTube channel, shop founder Ryan Friedlinghaus led the company’s first electric Bel Air conversion. The project began with a client’s desire to electrify a collection of vehicles without abandoning their distinctive personalities.

The finished car would need to look unmistakably like a classic Chevrolet while offering the driving experience of a Tesla Model 3. Achieving that combination meant solving some awkward engineering problems before the paint and upholstery could receive attention.

Rather than adapting the Chevrolet’s original chassis, the crew stripped a Tesla Model 3 down to its rolling platform. They removed the Tesla’s bodywork and took the exposed rolling chassis for a test drive, despite its lack of doors, lights, and seat belts, committing a bunch of safety violations in the process. Once they confirmed the drivetrain worked, the crew began adapting the Bel Air’s steel body to fit over the modern running gear.

One of the biggest problems merging the two vehicles was caused by their different wheelbases. Unlike a conventional classic-car frame, the Tesla platform wasn’t something the builders could casually shorten or stretch, so instead, they reshaped the Chevrolet’s rear wheel openings to achieve the desired proportions.

The Bel Air underwent extensive bodywork, including stripping, fabrication, surface preparation, and refinishing. Earlier workshop footage shows its original maroon-and-white appearance before the team transformed the exterior into a striking satin-red finish with gloss-black accents.

Black wheels, darkened trim, and a lowered stance give the Chevrolet a contemporary street-machine appearance. Its recognizable 1950s silhouette, rounded headlights, and prominent grille remain central to the design. It’s certainly not to everyone’s taste, but true to form, West Coast Customs built a car that’ll turn heads.

Inside, West Coast Customs kept the Model 3’s steering wheel, central touchscreen, and minimalist dashboard layout. Red dashboard accents connect the cabin to the exterior, while custom upholstery adds a distinctive finish.

The seats feature black suede with contrasting white stitching in an octagonal pattern inspired by the Lamborghini Urus, along with subtle red accents. Even the rear seating was carefully adapted to fit the Chevrolet’s older body.

The completed Bel Air was filmed charging alongside modern Teslas, making its unconventional powertrain impossible to miss. Owner Lisa Evans praised its easy driving character and the experience of enjoying a classic car with modern electric propulsion.

The video doesn’t reveal battery capacity, driving range, or performance figures. What it does show is a classic Chevrolet that retains its 1950s character while driving, charging, and functioning like a thoroughly modern Tesla.
