There was a major accident on Sept. 4 that involved a Tesla and a Honda Accord. The accident resulted in the driver of the Honda being hospitalized in critical condition.

The Friendswood Police Department released a statement with an update on the accident. Both vehicles were traveling southbound in the 600 block of S. Friendswood Drive when a Model 3 Tesla hit the Honda Accord from behind at a high rate of speed, causing it to roll over.

Both drivers were taken to local hospitals to receive treatment afterward. But an investigation into what caused the accident continued.

According to the police department, the crash reconstruction team was able to collect data from the crash scene and determined that 48-year-old Luan Ngo, who was driving the Tesla, was traveling at more than 100 mph and had alcohol in his system.

Two Weeks Later

The investigation continued for nearly two weeks and eventually led to Ngo’s arrest.

Ngo was arrested at approximately 10:47 a.m. on Sept. 17 after a Galveston County warrant was issued. Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, which is a second-degree felony, was the charge Ngo was arrested on, according to the police department.

Although investigators determined that Ngo had alcohol in his system, there was no DWI charge listed in the police department’s release. Ngo was booked into the Galveston County Jail on a $200,000 bond and was released on Sept. 18.

Dwi Remains Common in Texas

Driving while intoxicated remains a significant issue in Texas.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reported 90,453 DWI charges statewide in 2025, an increase from the 86,478 charges reported in 2024.

Those numbers provide some context for the number of DWI charges reported across Texas each year. In Ngo’s case, however, the police department said he had alcohol in his system but did not list a DWI charge in its release.

Honda Driver Still in Critical Condition

The driver of the Honda Accord is 24 years old and remained hospitalized in critical condition as of the department’s news release on Sept. 22.

On the Friendswood Police Department’s Facebook post, some comments mentioned how the road the accident occurred on was a 30 mph road. Meaning that Ngo was possibly traveling 70 miles above the posted speed limit. Looking up the road on Google Maps confirms this statement from the commenter.

This case highlights how developments in an investigation can sometimes take weeks to emerge and shows the consequences of driving more than 70 mph over the speed limit.

Ngo is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
