Five police officers and several bystanders were struck by a sedan driven by a teenage driver during a street takeover incident in Chicago, which has raised questions about the safety of those using the roads.
The dangerous incident highlights the suspect’s disregard for the law, given that he struck five officers and those around without hesitation, an alarming sign for law enforcement and residents.
Chicago has been experiencing violent street takeover incidents, which some choose to call “teen trends.” But regardless of how they are labeled, these gatherings consistently spiral into dangerous situations that demand public attention.
While the city’s mayor has urged parents to monitor where their children go in order to restrict them from participating in illegal takeovers, it remains to be seen if the city will adopt other measures to prevent incidents that threaten lives and property.
Officers Hospitalized After Being Struck by Sedan

According to a report by NBC Chicago, the police were pressed into action to investigate a teen gathering on the Near West Side that ended with thirteen people being arrested on Sunday.
The incident occurred at around 3:20 a.m. in the 1200 block of South Loomis Street, near Roosevelt Road on Chicago’s Near West Side, just west of downtown, according to another report by BNO News.
However, five police officers were hit by a blue sedan in the chaos that unfolded at the scene, leading to their hospitalization. Justin Peters of Violence Interrupters, a violence intervention group, said the car hit the officers and other teenagers at speed:
“All of a sudden the car just sped off and took off and just plow through… saw a couple of teenagers and four or five officers hit.”
Officials stated that behind the wheel of the sedan was an 18-year-old driver, who was traveling westbound in an eastbound lane when the incident took place. The driver was arrested among the 13 suspects and will face charges in connection with the case.
Alderman Jim Gardiner stated on Facebook:
“A vehicle struck and injured at least five Chicago Police Officers who were attempting to address a teen takeover on the near west side last night.
“The driver and passenger of the vehicle involved in the incident were immediately taken into custody.”
Chicago Mayor Issues Statement
Following the incident, the Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office released a statement on Sunday, urging parents and guardians to know where their children are. A spokesperson said:
“As we’ve said, unauthorized large gatherings can quickly become dangerous, and early this morning, after curfew hours, we saw that firsthand. We continue to call on parents and guardians to know where their children are and to help ensure they are safe and accounted for. There also must be accountability for the individuals who participated in violent and reckless behavior. We are creating opportunities and safe spaces for young people, but families, communities, and city leaders all have a role to play in keeping our young people safe.”
However, the situation seems more serious with reports of gunfire. The NBC Chicago crew at the scene of the incident reported gunfire just after 4 a.m. It remains to be seen if the bullet hit anyone.
With the summer months approaching, questions are being raised about how the police and activists plan to deal with such teen trends. The police will reportedly step up patrols in areas where such gatherings are planned by monitoring social media feeds for potential clues.
Although the five police officers who were struck by the sedan are said to be in fair condition, Chicago Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara said things could have gotten worse, and officers should have opened fire on the car. He said:
“Officers are entitled to shoot into that car that was coming at them… but they didn’t. They probably should of.” [sic]
