A vehicle burglary at a Tampa apartment complex began to unravel almost as soon as deputies arrived, helped by a detail more specific than simply how much money was missing.
The victims told Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies the exact amount of cash taken from their vehicle — and the denominations of the missing bills.
Deputies had been called to the Vista Palms Apartment Complex just before 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 17. HCSO said the victims also gave them descriptions of the people involved.
Moments later, deputies located two juveniles matching those descriptions. Then came something they could compare directly with what the victims had reported.
The Bills Match

HCSO said deputies found cash nearby that matched the denominations the victims had described.
That detail gave them something more distinctive than a matching dollar total. The sheriff’s office did not explain the particular mix of bills, and there is no need to guess why the victims had cash in those denominations; what mattered to the reported investigation was that they had described them before deputies found the money.
The victims had also reported a small black backpack missing from the vehicle. Deputies found that behind a fence, according to HCSO.
The sheriff’s office said a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old were arrested and charged in connection with the incident.
All parties are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
A Smaller Number
Vehicle burglaries have been moving in the opposite direction countywide, at least according to the sheriff’s office’s most recent annual figures.
In February, HCSO reported that vehicle burglaries fell 29% in 2025 compared with 2024. The agency said overall property crime declined by more than 22% during the same period.
Those figures were part of crime data HCSO said it submitted through the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System.
In the Vista Palms case, deputies said both juveniles were taken into custody after the cash and backpack were recovered.
