With summer approaching, street takeover incidents are expected to be on the rise. However, recent incidents from Chicago have highlighted how miscreants, who have no respect for life or property, targeted a Chicago Police Department vehicle.

Suspects were seen hitting the hood of a police car in a video that went viral on social media, as another car made contact with the police SUV, forcing it to reverse.

The scene shows that the suspects, who appear with covered faces, have no fear of the law or the police, leading to questions about how this problem of street takeovers could be tackled more aggressively.

Despite repeated street takeover incidents occurring in the city, the question is whether an example should be set by authorities to prevent such incidents in the future.

Two Street Takeovers Occur in a Span of a Few Days

According to a report by Fox 32 Chicago, two street takeovers took place within a few days. The first one occurred last Wednesday morning around 12:43 a.m. at S. Columbus Dr. and E. Balbo Dr.

The Chicago Police Department officers reportedly witnessed someone carelessly driving a silver sedan while fleeing from the scene. Officers eventually arrested 19-year-old Maximum Wyderski from Crestwood, who faces serious charges.

Wyderski faces misdemeanor charges of reckless driving, fleeing/attempting to elude officers, and nine vehicle citations, which include ones for fireworks and open container.

A video of a street takeover incident has gone viral, in which a silver sedan, positioned head-on against a police SUV, is moving forward.

Despite resistance from the police vehicle, the sedan can be seen accelerating to the point where its tires spin aggressively and create a cloud of smoke.

Suspects can be seen hitting the hood of the police SUV, while others record the incident on their phones.

However, it remains unclear if the first incident and the incident in the video occurred at the same time.

Ald. Peter Chico reported a second street takeover incident that took place last Friday night in Hegewisch around 10:00 p.m. near E. 130th and S. Torrence Ave, according to the report.

Suspects can be seen hitting the hood of a CPD vehicle and attempting to provoke the officers seated inside, despite the vehicle inching forward slowly.

One of the suspects was even seen flashing his middle finger at the officers, in an attempt to escalate the situation.

Ald. Raymond Lopez (15th Ward) has raised questions about how the incidents were handled. He said:

“Everyone should be arrested. Every car impounded. Period! I’m very much concerned only one person was arrested, in a sea of stupidity we only caught one criminal fish, I find that hard to believe because everyone there is breaking the law.

“Everyone there is contributing to the minors there who are breaking the law and all of them are putting each other’s lives at risk. There are municipal codes on the books now for all of those behaviors that we could’ve cited any one of them for, but that just tells me either A, we didn’t have the manpower to do it or we didn’t have the willingness to do it.”

Lopez added that the source of the problem must be addressed. He said:

“Nobody should be killed just going about their daily business because of a street take over, because someone wants to become TikTok, Instagram famous. A fire in the middle of a street. That is nonsensical to me, and it’s not worth the life that it will cost if we don’t nip this in the bud now.”
