A routine bread delivery turned into a multi-state police chase after authorities say someone stole a Franz Bakery truck from a Walmart parking lot in Idaho.
According to the North Idaho News, the truck kept rolling even after officers deployed spike strips near the Idaho-Washington state line. The pursuit finally ended somewhere few people would have guessed.
Police arrested a 34-year-old man after the stolen truck crashed through the gate of a Harley-Davidson dealership in Spokane Valley. You can read the original police release and updates from North Idaho News.
Police Say the Bread Truck Took Off
According to investigators, someone stole the Franz Bakery delivery truck around 5:45 a.m. Saturday from the Walmart on Mullan Avenue in Post Falls, Idaho.
Officers quickly located the truck traveling west on Interstate 90 and attempted a traffic stop. Police say the driver, identified as Michael Koskinen-Patron, refused to pull over and continued toward Washington.
Spike Strips Didn’t Stop the Chase
The pursuit exited Interstate 90 at Spokane Street before continuing north on Spokane Street and west on Seltice Way.
Officers deployed spike strips near the state line, flattening the truck’s front tires.
Police say the driver kept going anyway, prompting Washington law enforcement to join the pursuit and deploy additional spike strips.
The Chase Ended at a Harley-Davidson Dealership
The pursuit came to an end in Spokane Valley after the truck crashed through the gate of a Harley-Davidson dealership.
Washington officers took Koskinen-Patron into custody without further incident.
Idaho authorities say they plan to seek charges including grand theft, felony eluding, and felony malicious injury to property, while additional charges could follow in Washington.
Bread Trucks Aren’t Usually the Getaway Vehicle
Passenger cars and pickup trucks account for the vast majority of vehicle thefts, making a stolen commercial bread truck an unusual sight.
Fortunately, police say no serious injuries were reported, and officers recovered the Franz truck. The investigation remains ongoing.
