Saleen has spent decades proving there’s no such thing as a Mustang that’s too wild. Its next take on Ford’s pony car looks ready to push that philosophy even further.
The California company has released a shadowy teaser showing what it calls the SR Widebody. Most of the car is deliberately hidden, although Saleen isn’t exactly being subtle about the parts it wants us to see.
Massive wheel arches transform the Mustang’s stance, while an equally hard-to-ignore rear wing towers over the trunk. Saleen also says production will be “very limited,” suggesting this won’t become another regular member of its Mustang range.
The teaser was shared through Saleen’s official Instagram account and confirms the SR name is making a comeback. Saleen previously used that badge on some of its most extreme Mustang creations during the 1990s and early 2000s.
Saleen Is Going Big On Aero

The SR Widebody is based on the current S650-generation Mustang, although the image is a rendering rather than a photograph of a finished car. Its swollen front and rear fenders are the clearest changes, creating room for what should be some seriously wide rubber.
There’s also a vented hood visible beneath the cover, and we suspect the front bumper has received some attention. The huge fixed rear wing steals the show, rising far above the decklid and hinting that Saleen may have track use in mind.
Mechanical details haven’t been announced. Saleen hasn’t said whether the SR will use the Mustang GT or Dark Horse as its starting point, nor has it revealed horsepower figures or a launch date.
Saleen Already Builds An 850-HP Mustang
Whatever ends up beneath the SR’s hood has plenty to live up to. Saleen’s current 302 Mustang range already offers several performance levels, topped by the Black Label with up to 850 horsepower.
The company also offers its 775-hp Yellow Label and 490-hp White Label versions. Each gets Saleen-specific changes to areas such as suspension, aerodynamics, brakes, and interior trim rather than simply receiving an engine upgrade.
Given the SR Widebody’s appearance and limited-production billing, it would be surprising if Saleen stopped at dramatic bodywork. For now, however, anything beyond what the teaser shows is speculation.
Saleen Is Also Looking For Investors
The new Mustang arrives while Saleen is raising money from individual investors through Wefunder. According to Saleen’s original Wefunder campaign, the company has built over 40,000 high-performance vehicles during its history and says its current Mustang and SportTruck Signature Series generate most of its revenue.
The fundraising effort is also intended to support Saleen’s upcoming S1 sports car, development of the S11 supercar, new retail locations, and expansion of its dealer network. The company is accepting investments starting at $500.
That makes the SR Widebody one piece of a much bigger plan for Saleen. We still don’t know how powerful it will be, what it’ll cost, or when the cover comes off, but those enormous fenders and towering wing have already made quite the first impression.
