Some people seem to think the best way to show off on an e-bike is by trying to get the police to chase them. Unfortunately for one rider in Palm Springs, California, officers had a much smarter plan.
According to police, the rider was committing multiple Vehicle Code violations while also appearing to bait officers into pursuing him through downtown. Instead of taking the bait, they chose a strategy that was far less exciting for the suspect.
Rather than firing up a high-speed pursuit, the Palm Springs Police Department coordinated with its Impact Team, Detectives, and the Coachella Valley Real-Time Intelligence Center (CVRTIC). A drone kept watch from above while officers tracked the rider’s movements from a safe distance.
It’s another example of how technology continues to change modern policing. If the suspect was hoping for an adrenaline-filled getaway, he instead got a quiet aerial escort that ended the moment he stopped riding.
The Arrest Only Got Worse After He Reached the Patrol Car

Instead of engaging in a pursuit, Sergeant Torres coordinated with the department’s Impact Team, Detectives, and the Coachella Valley Real-Time Intelligence Center (CVRTIC) to develop a safer plan. Using drone technology and coordinated surveillance, officers monitored the rider’s movements as he traveled into neighboring Cathedral City. When the suspect eventually stopped at a local park and got off the e-bike, detectives moved in and safely took him into custody following a brief struggle.
The suspect’s problems didn’t stop after he was handcuffed. According to police, while seated inside a Palm Springs patrol vehicle, he shattered one of the cruiser windows, resulting in an additional felony vandalism charge.
By the end of the incident, the rider had been arrested on charges of reckless driving, resisting an officer, and felony vandalism.
Commenters Loved That Technology Beat a High-Speed Pursuit
The comments under the original Facebook post quickly turned into a mix of praise for the officers’ strategy and criticism of the rider’s decision to provoke police. Many people appreciated that officers relied on a drone instead of engaging in a potentially dangerous chase through city streets.
One commenter summed it up perfectly by writing, “You can’t outrun the radio, and now drones.” Another joked that the suspect probably wasn’t expecting technology to end the pursuit before it ever really began. Several others said the outcome was exactly how they hoped it would end, with one writing, “He goes to jail, and the bike gets crushed. Best ending ever.”
Others questioned why the rider didn’t simply take the bike off-road if he wanted to perform stunts. Commenters described the rider as someone looking for an audience, saying the goal wasn’t just to ride recklessly but to put on a show and see if police would play along. Judging by the outcome, officers had other ideas.
