A dangerous pursuit through southwest Washington came to a safe end after deputies used a Grappler device to stop a driver who had been speeding, driving into oncoming traffic, and causing multiple crashes. Authorities say the woman was believed to be experiencing a significant mental health crisis and was taken to a hospital following her arrest.
The incident unfolded around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, when Clark County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to reports of a reckless driver on State Route 503 through Battle Ground. Deputies soon learned the same vehicle had also been linked to multiple hit-and-run crashes in the Portland area.
Taking a look at the official video, Portland Police had previously reported the driver missing and believed she was in the middle of a mental health crisis. Deputies said that information became an important factor as they assessed how to safely resolve the situation.
Before law enforcement intervened, authorities say the driver reached speeds of more than 80 mph, repeatedly crossed into oncoming traffic, forced several vehicles off the roadway, and was involved in multiple collisions. Once the danger to the public became immediate, deputies were authorized to initiate a pursuit.

The video is pretty wild, showing the driver of the other vehicle driving through traffic, even going into oncoming lanes at one point. As a result, officers decided to set up grapplers on their vehicles to be able to grab the vehicles from behind.
This ended up being what successfully ended the pursuit without serious injuries to the driver, deputies, or other motorists. After being taken into custody, the woman was transported to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation and treatment.
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office said its deputies regularly respond to calls involving people in crisis and emphasized that those situations can become unpredictable very quickly. Officials praised the teamwork, professionalism, and restraint shown throughout the incident while expressing relief that no one was seriously hurt.
